UK's long-term jobless now required to visit every day or perform 6 months' volunteer work

Source: The Independent

Harsh rules to drive the long-term unemployed into work come into force today (Monday), which state they will only receive their benefits if they either show up at a jobcentre every day or commit to six months of voluntary work.

Those who fail to comply with the rules, which also offer signing up to a training scheme as a third option, will have their jobseeker’s allowance docked for four weeks for the first offence, and 13 weeks for the second.

Under the previous system, people were only required to attend a jobcentre once a fortnight so the move is likely to see long queues of people lining up to sign on every day.

... One major part of the scheme has run into immediate trouble. A group of leading charities, including Oxfam, has announced that it is boycotting the new mandatory work placement scheme on the grounds that volunteering should be genuinely voluntary and not something that the long-term unemployed are forced to do under a threat of losing their benefits.

...of our unemployed who have been out of work for as little as six months.

They are heartless shitholes who need to be called out, one by one.

Up with policies and ways to help them find employment, and to push businesses to hire them, and to work to actually increase the number of available jobs, they're going to double down on punishing the unemployed and desperate even further? Nice. Cameron keeps proving what hateful, hurtful assholes he and his parliamentary compatriots are.

What is it about the fact that jobs are few, and there are tons of desperate applicants for every opening, that privileged silver spoon fucks just can't get? They always want to demonize those who can't find work because there are few jobs available instead of working to enact policies that will increase employment, and instead of demonizing companies that pay thei executives millions instead of investing in employment opportunities.

I'm currently on disability rather than Jobseekers but I know that we're next on the hitlist. I had to stop reading domestic news entirely because it would so often set off a self-harming spiral.

I would have thought that the UK would be a bit more "civilized" in this regard, but I guess silver spoon fucks like Cameron and his ilk are the same everywhere, unfortunately. And I hope they leave your disability alone, although, sadly, I'm not all that optimistic about that kind of thing, either here in the US, where they've been trying to go after it for years, or in the UK with fucks like Cameron and company in charge.

If I shared my opinion of Cameron and his band of vandals, this post would be (rightly) removed. I go to the edge of suicide whenever my disability comes up for renewal, if it gets cut off, that would probably push me over.

Frustrated, and disillusioned. One of the reasons California switched their unemployment centers to phone only. It's like they are inviting unrest.

Too many of teh public have been trained to despise the unfortunate and Cameron's sociopathic government is all too happy to whip the unemployed ever harder. I'm on disability rather than Jobseekers but I think that, if my reassessment were ever refused, I'd last perhaps a week on this fascism before killing myself.

With not enough jobs to keep the current citizens employed, how is the UK managing the unskilled labor that is arriving?
