'Mass casualty situation' reported in Arkansas town after tornado hitshttp://www.cbc.ca/news/world/mass-casualty-situation-reported-in-arkansas-town-after-tornado-hits-1.2623784
"SNIP....................
A 'mass casualty situation' was reported in the town of Vilonia, Arkansas, on Sunday after a tornado touched down there, a spokesman for the Faulkner County Sheriff's office said.
The spokesman said the number of casualties was not immediately clear.
Earlier Sunday, at least two people were killed and a fire station was destroyed by a tornado that touched down in a small Oklahoma town in the northeast corner of the state, according to local media and the National Weather Service.
.....................SNIP"
Vibes to one and all.

(3,818 posts)the local stations - http://thv11.com http://arkansasmatters.com have film footage of the tornado when it hit on I-40 and have pics of the mangled tractor trailers. There is storm chaser footage driving down the freeway and it is the scariest thing I have ever seen. I believe they said the tornado was 2 miles wide.
From what I am understanding they still can't get into Vilonia proper and are having to clear trees from the road to actually get into town to see who needs help. They are triageing at a gas station just outside town.
We are suppose to get this again at 3 a.m.
Send good thoughts, prayers, light a candle, whatever - for OK, TX, AR, MO. Looks like it is heading up to IL and KY maybe IN.
Stay safe everyone
Stay safe and thanks for the update Hestia

(3,370 posts)An amateur storm chasing team foolishly got too close. Their truck suffered a lot of damage, but they were okay.
Tony Laumbach, of Twistex, publicly spoke out against the actions of this team because of the way they chased. Tony is a close friend a long time colleague of Tim Samaras, who lost his life with his son, Paul, and friend, Carl Young, in El Reno last year.
As far as I know, other chasers out this evening are safe.

(86,646 posts)a good part of the day as it has been spotty here. But then I decided to watch the eagle cam in Decorah, IA and it occurred to me taht they might be in the line of this monster system. They have been having high winds and some nasty thunderstorms which were ending right about the time these twisters hit. I had two weather site going and saw this whole things start to develop but was called away for a while. When I came back online, I found this info... still just horrified.
I used to drive through that whole part of the US for decades and have had a couple close calls with tornadoes and lightning... this is the stuff of my storm nightmares from back then. Gives me chills, might be a while before I can sleep tonight thinking about everyone in that part of the country.
Gonna be a rough summer for a lot of folks, I'm thinking.
This is so bad that witnesses are obviously victims too.

(154,021 posts)More severe droughts, and in general more severe weather as predicted by the science? Next you will slam my neighbors in their 80s who also have noticed changes in the climate over their lifetime, or governments...(including ours) are wrong.
Phew!!!
Human memory is a fickle thing, but when people who have been living in a region all their lives, worst, going back a generation or two tell you things are different...it usually means it is.
Especially when you start hearing this en mass. I suspect 2014 will be the year it finally registers in the US, climate change is real. As to cyclonic air circulations in the middle of a continental mass, no, they are not common, just like cold hurricanes (local NWS description for the winter storm a month ago in California) are not common either. And the drought in the west has been compared to a 500 year drought.
Yup, all these hundred year events, none of us has been paying attention.

(4,868 posts)I was merely correcting the nonsense that was that tweet (that you naively thought was relevant or true).
I live in tornado alley and not on internet blogs as an amateur meteorologist, try again.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)also going as to how unusual this pattern is.
You might want to correct him, serious.
We are having a climate that is changing, this is being reflected in weather that is more dramatic, if you wish to call the damage it is doing more dramatic.
This was predicted by science.
This guy said something else that those of us in Fire prone Southern California were nodding to. We have had a year round fire season, so far you have had a year round tornado season.
ForgoTheConsequence
(4,868 posts)I'm not denying climate change (if anything you're the one who has been busted posting links to climate denial blogs). The tweet was wrong and I posted facts (facts aren't random sources on twitter, as a journalist you should know that) correcting it.
And it hasn't been a year round tornado season, it has been an unusually mellow tornado season (in part because of climate change and the drought in the west.)
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)And you are right, I deny climate change so much that called one of the top deniers on it in a long blog post.
You know you are hilarious.
This can occur in particularly nasty storm set ups.

(86,646 posts)in the graphic changes with current conditions so today it is different from yesterday nut I have seen this over large bodies of water on occasion but never over land.
Whatever the case, this was a particularly nasty set up that is still playing out today. I think that there will be some kind of reckoning with the "deniers" by the end of this season. At least I hope there will be.
Tree-Hugger
(3,370 posts)It is never good.
I don't know about the deniers. They have ignored all warning signs. They will blame this outbreak on Jesus, chem trails, or HAARP. But climate science is "nonsense" to them.
Tornado outbreaks are typical this time of year. That's another thing they will point out. "It's just Spring." They ignore the fact that we're seeing more of the large varieties of tornadoes. Imagine if monsters like the one in El Reno become more commonplace. We'd be screwed.

(154,021 posts)@PLewbel: NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Governor's aide: Arkansas tornado death toll now at 8; separate twister kills 1 in Oklahoma.
And the YouTube video from a drone might make legal history as well. If any station used it, could lead to the FAA getting cute (the rules for commercial use of drones are all but clear, on purpose, FAA does not want any commercial use)

I know some people get off on disasters but I feel bad for those we lost and those who lost loved ones.
Stay safe.
the body count aspect is kind of creepy but some want to know right away for some reason.
What I find more informative is the notices of affected areas. Anyone within two counties of any of this will be affected in a number of ways. This is a huge area to be dealing with this in one day!
Just insane. Look at this highly unusual pattern that I get the feeling is soon to become the norm...

(12,977 posts)The lingering cold weather held off the start of tornado season to either a record or near-record late date. I think it finally got going with a couple of small tornadoes last week. And now -- bang.
Tornadoes at this time of year aren't unusual -- but the overall pattern certainly is.
