Source: New York Times
It is, in a way, too bad that Cliven Bundy the rancher who became a right-wing hero after refusing to pay fees for grazing his animals on federal land, and bringing in armed men to support his defiance has turned out to be a crude racist. Why? Because his ranting has given conservatives an easy out, a way to dissociate themselves from his actions without facing up to the terrible wrong turn their movement has taken.
... Its true that some of the people profiting from implicit taxpayer subsidies manage, all the same, to convince themselves and others that they are rugged individualists. But theyre actually welfare queens of the purple sage.
And this in turn means that treating Mr. Bundy as some kind of libertarian hero is, not to put too fine a point on it, crazy.
... American conservatism used to have room for fairly sophisticated views about the role of government. ... But todays conservative leaders were raised on Ayn Rands novels and Ronald Reagans speeches (as opposed to his actual governance, which was a lot more flexible than the legend).

I've been hollerin' about the stupid cows and their welfare queen owners for 40 years. If y'all had seen the devastation of BLM and National Forest land by caused by welfare cattle overgrazing the land, you'd a been hollerin' too.

(5,762 posts)Cliven Bundy is indeed a thief, a trespasser, and a scofflaw. Of these three things, there is no doubt. He is also a racist, but there's no law against thinking the way he does or speaking about it.
He has stolen from U.S. taxpayers, claiming that he doesn't recognize the existence of the organization that collects the taxes. That makes him an absurd thief.
Welfare, on the other hand, is a benefit awarded to people in genuine need, who are experiencing real hardship. Need is demonstrated, and benefits are awarded. It's an organized system designed to help people. Welfare recipients are not thieves, no matter how many times the media tries to make it sound as if they are.
It is an insult to the institution of welfare to claim that Bundy's arbitrary and brazen helping himself to federal land is any kind of welfare. It isn't. He's stolen from the American people, and he deserves to be called on it for what he is. A brazen thief.

(11,175 posts)The fees for grazing cattle on BLM land are well below market value. It's a government policy to help those ranchers. In that sense it's like welfare, even though it's not based on an assessment of need.
Zorra (in #4) is absolutely right about the devastating effects of allowing grazing. You can see this quite graphically if you look at an exclosure -- a portion of an area from which cattle are excluded. See this photo essay, in which the healthy natural conditions within the exclosure are contrasted with the devastation wrought by the cattle just on the other side of the fence.
