President Barack Obama was enlisted by Time to write the blurb on Pope Francis (who was again identified by the magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people). Here's what the President had to say:
His Holiness has moved us with his message of inclusion, especially for the poor, the marginalized and the outcast. But it has been his deeds, his bearing, the gestures at once simple and profound embracing the sick, ministering to the homeless, washing the feet of young prisoners that have inspired us all.
Pope Francis reminds us in ways that words alone cannot that no matter our station in life, we are bound by moral obligations to one another. His example challenges us to live out those obligations through work to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality and promote peace; to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, care for the sick and open new doors of opportunity and visions of possibility for everyone. His message of love and inclusion, his regard for the least of these, distills the essence of Jesus teachings and is a tonic for a cynical age. May we heed his humble example.

Thanks for the response.

(6,795 posts)As a Catholic, I am excited about Pope Francis.
He is off to a great start.
I hope that he follows through with actions.

(45,319 posts)The Bishop of the Jinja Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Rt. Rev. Fr. Charles Wamika, in todays Easter Message delivered at St. Chalres Lwanga Catholic Church, praised the Members of Parliament for the Anti-Homosexuality Act that provides life in prison for gay (LGBTI) people in Uganda. The Bishop called for a blessing for Ugandas Christians who worked so hard to free the land of gays. The Bishope also asked for parents to hand over their gay children to authorities, so they would be rewarded in heaven. I would call that a statement praising and calling for a genocide.
Since the passage of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people have gone into hiding.
From the voice of a young man accused of being gay who is in hiding in Uganda:
The Bishop of Jinja Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev. Fr. Charles Wamika, in todays Easter Message delivered at St. Chalres Lwanga Catholic Church, praised the Members of Parliament for taking a stand to see to it that the Anti-homosexuality bill passed into law, he went ahead and called on the faithful to vote for President Museveni in 2016 general elections for signing the bill into law.
He reminded the Christians that, it has been a law and he sent blessings to all Christians who have been working so hard to make Jinja a land free of gay persons. He said throughout human history the catholic church has fought evil and blood has been shed, he called on all the Christians to do whatever they can in their own means to clean this city.
I am surprised that a well educated bishop, well traveled and studied in different western countries uses his position to justify killing. He asked parents with gay suspected children to handle them over to authorities and their reward is in heaven. This is too much hatred. I wonder if we will hear from the Pope on this. If not, I lose all hope.

(6,539 posts)it's always disappointing to see the leader of the Catholic church lauded as a force for moral good when his church holds such immoral positions on gays and women.
Thanks for continuing to remind people of this.

(22,000 posts)The piece by President Obama on Pope Francis was well written. Some of the names on that list really churn my stomach. I could probably pick out 20 easily that could fall off the face of the earth and I wouldn't care (anyone who is a Republican and/or affiliated with Fox would be on the top of that list).
