This interactive map of the U.S. shows the hourly wage needed to rent a one-bedroom apartment county by county. Unsurprisingly, in most places, the touted $10.10 minimum wage doesn't begin to cut it.

(9,298 posts)In my home turf, you need to be earning $20.83 to afford a one-bedroom apartment.
Guess that accounts for many folks working 2 jobs. But if they're below $10.10 an hour, they're still coming up short.

(3,660 posts)In my county it states 11/hr. I personally rent out perfectly comfortable well maintained TWO bedroom HOUSES for $550/mo or less. Lesser rents can easily be found if you are ok with smaller places or more marginal neighborhoods, although we have very few truly bad neighborhoods. A 11/hr job would mean a gross income of $1907/mo so my guess is that they are a) looking at median rents rater than acceptable unit rents AND assuming the traditional <30% of gross pay rent.
