He was a 12 1/2 year old golden retriever/chow mix. On Thursday of last week, he was really lethargic and wasn't eating. On Friday morning, we took him to the vet where they performed some tests and an ultrasound. They found tumors on his spleen, adrenal gland and possibly his liver. Plus he had fluid in his belly from an abscess that ruptured which was causing his lethargy and fever. The vet said that he might not survive surgery. It was a gut-wrenching, heart breaking decision to put him to sleep
He was a great dog. He loved people and was always happy to see anyone. Whenever we would come home, he would whine and wag his tail because he was so happy to see us. It's quiet now and it's hard to get used too. Goodbye Sabot! I miss you!

(20,763 posts)The presence our critterfriends bring to our lives-- of unconditional love and interest and focus-- leaves a big, painful hole.
May the love Sabot leaves you with, bring comfort to the rest of your journey.
condolingly,

(14,524 posts)... with our furry partners in life, is that we are likely to have to let them go. Each time one of ours heads for the Rainbow Bridge, they take a little of me with them and leave some of themselves with me.
I find some comfort in this:
A Dogs Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in the world
is more grateful for kindness than my loving heart.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I would lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world¹s sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail
when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now
a domestic animal and no longer used to bitter elements.
I ask no greater glory than the privilege of
sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Though you had no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water for, although I would not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well to romp and play and do your biding, walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should yours be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to take my health or sight, do not turn me away from you.
Rather, hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was ever safe in your hands.

(5,376 posts)I lost my Cammy when she was 13--and for that entire time she was my friend, companion and source of unconditional love, as I know Sabot was yours. I still cry when I think of Cammy, but as is Sabot, she is worthy of the tears. I send hugs from over here East of the Cascades. Sabot was blessed to share her life with such loving and caring people.

(3,249 posts)What a good looking fella.
This really hurts. I am more of a cat person, but I also really like dogs. In fact, I like most animals more than most people. But when my last cat had to be put to sleep a few years ago, it hurt so much I haven't yet been able to contemplate a new little buddy. Hopefully that feeling will pass for both you and me, and we will both be able to find a new friend.
