(18,998 posts)This is not a with us or against us forum.
But those numbers are not the end all...
Unemployment is down, but some of those numbers is because unemployment insurance was not extended and many have given up looking for work or took a job at McDonald's just so they can eat.
The stock market is up...well that is wonderful for those who have a stock portfolieo...they are making money...for those that don't, and that is the same as those out of work and living in their cars...it don't mean shit.
And the ones most happy about the insured is the insurance company...they have millions of new customers to bleed dry...and at least 30% of that money will go into their pockets and make even more money for the same people who are benefiting from the stock market rise.
So the real question is do people get health care?...and if they have a 5000 deductible the answer be no more than before they had insurance.
I am not upset at all by it...I just don't think it solved many problems for people on the bottom 50% of this country...and I care more about them than the top...which is what Democrats used to be all about.

(533 posts)There is certainly a lot a progressive can criticize Obama for and yet still understand that he is not even close to a republican. It the either/or logical fallacy.
Some world we live in where a poster has to say this will make some members mad because he mentioning the success of a democratic president on a democratic board!

(11,833 posts)Have fun here. I guess it takes all kinds to be progressive. I'm of the opinion that we elected the best President we could, and he's doing the best he can. No question in my mind though, that many are hurting from low wages, and our oversized war budget. Things won't change overnight, or from just one person. We've got to get more progressives in Congress. I think we agree on that. Have a good day!

(65,616 posts)Or this is more of the typical, "Here is some great news for progressives BUT I know you all hate the POTUS, I just know you do!" "Flame away!" Someone divide that pretzel logic by 3 and I think they will find it to be weekend warrior type math.
Of course the other all to sad, but common type is, "I support the POTUS, but watch me make an incredibly offensive title about the POTUS...er just because."
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)But as you're already aware, some confuse "progressive win" with "unconditional support for the President", which results in the occasional post like the OP above.

(65,616 posts)Sad, but hey I guess they have nothing else to live for but to project their hate unto us on DU. Go fig.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)Democrats, thus neutering the good news in the numbers as good news by weaponizing that information. It stinks, this OP and those like it. Stinks.
Rex
(65,616 posts)Liberals support this POTUS at around 90% and voted for him around that number too. The people running around crying about everyone on DU hating on the POTUS have a clear cut agenda. No doubt.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)Some of them are agenda driven toxins, others are just people who want to be mean, rude and obnoxious and hide behind Obama's skirts when busted 'you all hate us because we support the President' they say, as if they are not disliked for the rudeness, or for saying gays have plenty of rights or that Latin America is 'but a cyst on the anus of the world'. They say horrible things and act with great aggression and then blame their lack of social acceptance on the President, who is perhaps the most gracious politician I have ever seen. It is really very despicable, and I hope they understand that some people do not fall for the posturing.
I'm a Democrat from generations of Democrats, nothing these fools say can ruffle my feathers, but it is destructive to the Party in general and it can't be good for DU's traffic. It's childish in the tantrum on the floor demanding sense, not in the captivated by wonder sense.
BlancheSplanchnik
(20,219 posts)I don't think there are layers of complex intent or rhetorical scheming embedded in OP's like this, generally.
The feeling I get about it is more basic: you read a lot of hostile posts about PBO here. Some are good critique---
Yet, it also seems like many are angry venting, blaming an entire sick system on him, mocking specific groups within the DU community, and so forth.
There is enough Flinging going on that the prospect of pointing out PBO successes can be daunting, because it's guaranteed that you will get flamed, insulted, stereotyped. That's the truth here; it can't be denied.
It's a pretty common human behavior to try and protect yourself from attack. Pre-empting is one common way of doing that. Saying "flame away" doesn't sound like some nefarious word play to me, just a little self-defense.

A thin argument you make for your characterization of a Democratic community. A strained and pained portrait. It is not just the vapidity of the argument, but the lengths you go to make it that I find to be damning and damaging.

(13,485 posts)And that is supposed to be good? Fake money?
It's over valued capitol investment and the perfect machine for plundering middle income, retirement funds, wrecking small business and funneling it to the 1%. We are ripe for another round of "take the money and run". Put another way, it's money with nothing to back it up and therefore just another shell game.
When the pea is dropped from that shell game, you can bet the unemployment number will rocket and many will not be paying their insurance.
So.... what are you happy about?
DFW
(54,445 posts)1.) It's great damage control, but the damage has not yet been completely controlled, and we still have a ways to go for progress. I realize that Obama has come a long way just to pull us back to close to zero after Cheney (dba Bush Lite) put us so deep in the hole. But we have to try and get beyond there, and head forward/upward. "Progress" means more than getting back to the surface and treading water. Obama won't have an easy time his last two years, but I give him a lot of credit for swimming upstream since 2011. Granted, the Dow at 16000 is great for those that owned and kept stock, but we have to keep in mind how many Americans didn't share in that rally due to owning no stock. Also, unemployment COULD improve, and we COULD get a lot more of the uninsured insured.
That having been said, a Republican administration these past 6 years would have finished us off, not to mention having given us two MORE members of the Supreme Court in the mode of Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy, Alito and Roberts. Think of THAT court deciding the issues that come before it for the next 15 years. Scary, huh?
2.) Good as the progress has been, especially under the withering opposition of a press mostly opposed to any progress at all, this country absolutely MUST have a Democratic president for at LEAST four more years if there is be even the slightest solidification of--not to mention building on--the gains we have made since Cheney left office. Preferably with a friendly Senate and House to boot. This will not be easy. Gerrymandering, SCOTUS-enabled dirty money, Republican election fraud and unfriendly media will do their level best to make sure it doesn't happen. Even if it's Hillary, which I still doubt, she'll be FAR preferable to any Republican in the White House. I think I've heard "corporatist!" as often as I've heard "Benghazi!" Neither one impresses me in this case. It's the general tone and direction that the president sets, and if anyone wants a contrast, consider Cheney's pals Roberts and Alito on the Supreme Court as opposed to Obama's nominations of Sotomayor and Kagan. Look how the four of them have ruled since being seated. In the words of a 91 year old friend of mine back in the States, "'nuff said!"
