I am in my mid-50s. If I were a younger man I would seriously look for other places to live.

While I wouldn't want to be a "quitter" (like Sarah Palin) and run away from the challenges of restoring the U.S., I seriously don't think there is any hope here. We are going to remain a seriously divided country. On one side of the divide you have people who believe in fairness, equality, opportunity, science, decorum and civil respect. On the other side you have people who are hateful, want to deny anyone else a chance at getting ahead, believe they are Christians, love their guns and their money more than anything else, hate facts, especially science, but worship the uber-wealthy.

I cannot imagine the anguish of this young man's family. He came to America as an exchange student. He was excelling in school, sports, was well liked, etc. I'm sure the family was somewhat glad he was in rural America away from the big cities and the crime in those cities. As well this young man German of Turkish descent.

We don't know why he was in that garage. Was it to burgle? We don't know. The facts suggest the murderer set a trap and then lay in wait to kill anyone who dared come onto his property and thought the castle doctrine would protect him. Even if this young man was thinking of burgling this home, based on what we know he had no weapons and at no time did he act in an aggressive or threatening manner to the murderer other than he was on his property.

I was an exchange student to Europe at about the same age. My parents would have been devastated if I had been killed based on these facts.

I think the murderer is not going to get off so easily. I was raised in Wyoming and our neighbor to the north, Montana, is not that much different. People there generally have honor. I think this man is going to have a very difficult time using the castle doctrine as defense on these facts.

I am the first to admit we are country full of criminals. Statistically violent crimes are down but we are still a society in crisis. Why the murders? Why the burglaries? Why the rapes, etc.? Our focus is on prosecution, incarceration and revenge. We place little focus on asking why? What is wrong with out society?

This wasn't the case 40 years ago. What has changed? Is it the increase in the population of African-Americans? Statistically not. Is it the increase in the population of the poor? Hard to tell.

If we are ever going to stabilize and/or reverse the trends towards crime that then drive the nut cases to think they can act as vigilantes we need to ask the question why? Until we are honest about that we are doomed to failure. Conservatives don't want to know that answer because it will destroy their world view.

I suspect the reasons are tightly linked to poverty, declining real wages for workers, poor education, a sense of hopelessness, racial and other divisions, the concentration of wealth, etc.
