‘Meet the Press’ crisis as David Gregory’s producer quits

David Gregory’s tenure at “Meet the Press” has suffered another blow after the show’s long-standing producer, Chris Donovan, quit after 12 years and defected to work for ABC rival George Stephanopoulos at “This Week.”

Donovan, who started at ABC last week, was fed up with embattled Gregory and the direction of “Meet the Press,” sources tell Page Six, which has sunk to third place in the ratings, behind CBS’ “Face the Nation” and ABC’s “This Week.”
One source said, “There is a tense atmosphere at ‘Meet the Press.’ Gregory is dismissive of the staff, and is often hard to reach or approach.

“He is famously the only host on Sunday morning TV who won’t pick up the phone to seal the deal to get a big guest. There’s nobody else on TV, and certainly on Sunday mornings, who thinks they are too important to do that. It is tough on the producers.”

Anyway.. I read later that he's going to be part of the panel.. not as a separate guest like I imagined.

Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson will be guests on NBC's "Meet the Press" at 9 a.m. on WESH-Channel 2. The panel will be pop singer will.i.am; NBC's Chuck Todd; Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker; Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah; and Anita Dunn, former communications director in the Obama White House.

Sat May 3, 2014, 07:06 AM
May 2014

I pressed a link in the story which went to her read on David Gregory in the NY post.

from the link:

What’s the matter with David Gregory? And why don’t people like to watch him?

I could have saved the honchos at NBC News a lot of time and trouble. The first answer is: David Gregory is a phony. The second answer is: He’s a jerk.

Gregory is the anti-Russert. His boorish behavior around DC is legendary, from his juvenile tantrums with the Bush press staff to his drunken radio appearances to his diva snit fits with innocent bystanders while filming news segments.

One of the most telling and notorious anecdotes involves Russert himself, who reportedly reprimanded Gregory in 2008 for going ballistic on a poor waitress while the two TV stars dined at a DC restaurant. But “Gregory still treats most of … the newsroom like s–t,” an insider told the Web site Jossip. “Amazing how NBC cares more about food servers than about the people who have to deal with Gregory’s arrogance every day.”

Since Gregory doesn’t have the intellectual heft to carry in-depth interview segments the way Russert did, “Meet the Press” producers have reduced substantive exchanges to a few minutes and larded the rest of the show with fluff and stunts.

That means: If it’s Sunday, it’s “Meet the Jerk.”

People want investigative news! You can only lie to people for so long before they catch on to you, once you've revealed your true colors, people will eventually change the channel permanently. People want the truth!

Shows like Maddow, Hayes, O'donnell, Harris-Perry, Real Time, The Daily Show, Colbert Report and soon to be the Late Show are going to continue to grow. People don't want bias, they don't want discrimination, they don't want partisanship, they want the truth.

And the truth is, the republican party is full of liars! Top to bottom, LIARS!

And yeah, Rachael is too driven and intellectual for them since her stories aren't made up of sound-bite talking points as "journalism". In fact, she does the opposite - deconstructs nonsensical soundbites and reconstructs the actual background and history of the topic to produce meaningful reporting of a story.

But I wish the Obama administration would work a little harder at getting their people on these shows, catapulting the propaganda just a little bit. We complain about McCain having his own green room, but every time they call him, he comes on. And he gets a free run to let the hobgoblins of his little mind out for a romp.

As to Michelle Maglalang's assertion that David Gregory is "the anti-Russert," we could do with a lot less adulation for that pumpkinhead. Russert's default setting - by his own admission - was "off the record." That's not a journalist, that's a father-confessor.

Media Millionaires

Journalism by and for the 0.01 Percent

Fairness & Accuracy In Media

EXCERPT...

The media business outstrips other industries in generously compensating its top executives (New York Times, 5/5/13), and those resources could of course be put to better use by hiring reporters. But that’s not the way the system works. And it’s not just the bosses getting rich. Indeed, many high-profile members of the media elite live a rather charmed life. The journalism business looks to be in a disastrous state—but the view from the top is just fine.

SNIP...

David Gregory

As host of NBC’s Meet the Press, David Gregory is paid to quiz politicians on the tough issues of the day. But he offers his own opinions on the show, too; he’s encouraged the Obama White House to propose “big spending cuts” in order to confuse Republicans (1/27/13; FAIR Blog, 1/29/13). He thinks the White House should have done more to have a “moment in the Rose Garden” with a few corporate CEOs (11/11/12; FAIR Blog, 11/13/12), and demanded to hear more from the White House about the “hard choices” Americans must make to get by with less (1/29/12). He worried about the problem of Occupy activists “demonizing Wall Street” (10/10/11). He expressed concern that the more people criticize big banks, “the closer you get to wiping out the shareholder completely”—a person “who is not just a fat cat” (2/22/09).

In that sense, Gregory is reflecting what passes for conventional wisdom in corporate media—but also among people in Gregory’s economic class. His salary is not disclosed, but his predecessor, Tim Russert, reportedly made more than $5 million a year (Washington Post, 5/23/04). As Politico reported (3/15/12), Gregory was seeking membership in the exclusive Chevy Chase Club, which requires an $80,000 “initiation fee.” Gregory was sponsored by a couple of Washington-area real estate moguls.

SNIP...

In 2013, Gregory made gossipy news in Washington after apparently becoming incensed about a parking situation near his home (Washington Post, 4/10/13). Visitors to the D.C. Design House, an architectural showcase to benefit the Children’s National Medical Center, were evidently clogging up the streets near Gregory’s home. According to one of the designers, Gregory came to the house to very loudly complain on the front lawn. Witnesses claimed that Gregory yelled something about knowing “all the politicians in town,” which the anchor denied.
