NYC cyclist arrested for using cellphone to film cop, told iPhones are ‘being used as guns’

Mister City, policeman sitting

A New York City cyclist was arrested, while attempting to film a police officer giving him a ticket for running a red light, with the explanation that “iPhones are being used as guns,” according to The Gothamist.

Will Paybarah,24, of Brooklyn, was stopped by a police officer in late March for – admittedly– running a red light while on his bike. As the officer approached him, Paybarah pulled out his cellphone to film the encounter only to have the officer immediately tell him to put his phone away.

According to Paybarah, “When I tried to record my interaction with the officer I was arrested… in 10 seconds flat.”

In the brief 10-second video, Paybarah can be heard asking “Alright, you want my I.D?” to which the police officer immediately replies, “Put your phone away.”

When the cyclist asks why, the officer says, “Because I’m telling you.”

As Paybarah tries to explain that he has the right to film the incident, the officer reaches for the phone and Payabarah can be heard saying, “Don’t touch me” before the officer snatches the phone out of his hand.

Paybarah explained that he was then arrested.

“After those 10 seconds I was pulled off my bike, pushed up against the metal fence, placed in handcuffs and put into the back seat of the car, ” he said. “Other officers came. They joked saying they were going to ‘handcuff my bike to the tree.’”

After he was placed in the back of a police cruiser, Paybarah asked why he was being arrested. According to him a police officer told him it was because “people are using iPhones as guns.”

13. Cell Phone Guns: True

The video clip at the bottom will show the cell phone actually firing. Again, these phones have not hit the US (and hopefully never will), but they are in use in overseas. So keep that in mind if you are going through customs and are asked to turn over your cell phone to be checked. Always remember that you should never joke with Custom Officials and you should do your best to cooperate.

At first sight it looks like a regular cell phone — same size, same shape, same overall appearance.

But beneath the digital face lies a .22-caliber pistol, a phone gun capable of firing four rounds in quick succession with a touch of the otherwise standard keypad.

European law enforcement officials — stunned by the discovery of these deadly decoys — say phone guns are changing the rules of engagement in Europe.

The fucking cop just didn't want to be recorded so made up the shit. They don't mind lying.

I cannot wait for better recording options for people. Like google glass, even clueless cops cannot think google glass is a gun.

And of course you left off this part.....

Do "cell phone guns" represent an alarming turn in concealed weaponry technology? Probably not, as a customs spokesman maintained that"there's no indication that these are being mass-produced," and a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms noted:
Though the novelty of cell-phone guns is interesting, ATF spokesman John D'Angelo says the idea of concealing firearms in common devices is not new. "Disguised weapons have been around forever. We've seen guns in the form of canes, pens, beepers. As technology progresses and becomes more prevalent, disguised weapons will change to mirror that."

I made sure the paragraph quoted explained that the guns were located in Europe, although the original article is from 2002 and I suppose they could, and likely have, made their way here by now. Criminals always come up with modifications to their guns to give the police pause. Just look at the super soaker-disguised guns, or the criminals who paint the ends of their real guns orange to make our good policemen and women pause at a critical moment.

My intent in posting the article was not to excuse the officer, but rather educate the laymen of DU who think a cellphone gun is an impossibility.

I'm a firm believer that police should be recording any and every public contact.

I'm not going to post too much but is someone wanted to do harm to a police officer, a cellphone gun would be the last thing they would use.

They're not afraid of cellphone guns, they're using it as an excuse to prevent people from recording them. Thank goodness one of these boneheads havent decided to use deadly force.
