Black caller on Big Eddie radio just went ballistic

The very last caller on Big Eddies radio show said she lives in the ghetto of Chicago and says she blames the blacks for shooting. She said she HATED being black and is sick and tired of the blacks making this a federal case crying about racism when blacks kill blacks every day. She said that the blacks brought on the Trayvon shooting themselves with their violent culture using hoodies etc.

Big Eddie just sat there dumbfounded offering that lots of whites are like that too. "Yeah, but I'm talking about MY people".
She said she might shoot a black guy wearing a hoodie too if she met him on the street and she had a gun. She's tired of the loud music, kids with hoodies and pants down to knees, drug dealing blacks living on the dole, etc etc etc. She said that they gave people like her trouble because she is responsible. They embarrass her she said. She ranted on for 4 minutes.

is that this caller sounds like she might have some personal experiences in her own neighborhood that have clouded her judgment of the Trayvon case, i.e., just because there is black-on-black crime, most especially in lower socioeconomic areas, this still doesn't excuse Zimmerman for shooting Martin. That's all I meant. Thanks.

Hartmann always is referring to the this famous study in England showing the correlation between the country's wealth gap and amount of crime, with their own website Equality Trust.

http://www.equalitytrust.org.uk/

The higher the wealth inequality in a society the more murder and crime the country will have have.

.............The link between inequality and homicide rates has been shown in as many as 40 studies, and the differences are large: there are five-fold differences in murder rates between different countries related to inequality. The most important reason why violence is more common in more unequal societies is that it is often triggered by people feeling looked down, disrespected and loss of face.

Sometimes older people get a bit grouchy about "those damn kids", but they usually don't go on the radio to complain - they go local and complain to their neighbors and friends. Then again, sometimes you do meet truly self-hating African Americans (Clarence Thomas and Herman Cain for example).

I remember my first trip to rural Georgia from Chicago, and was astonished that the white people were almost unintelligble to me, until I realized they had "black" accents! Really was an eye opener. It really drove home that inner city African Americans really were descendants of former slaves in the rural south who had migrated to the rust belt for factory jobs.

No such thing as a black accent.

Thu Mar 29, 2012, 04:53 PM
Mar 2012

where people listened to a voice (or series of voices) and made a determination as to the "race" of the voice(s). I think it was done in San Francisco...

With -something well over - 80% of the respondents, they could accurately determine whether the voice was African American or Caucasian.

Which makes sense from an acoustic standpoint. The nasal chamber is responsible for a lot of the resonance with which a voice is produced. Add to that the fact that on average, African Americans (and black Africans in general) have a much higher bone density, even among children. Bone density also changes the resonance of the voice.

But the authors of the study didn't offer any such explanation... just that it was observable.

Just greatly saddened. If you have spent any time in the ghettos of south and west Chicago, you might get a glimmer of the despair that is driving this woman's comments. I haven't been back in 10 years, but there are places there that are violent almost beyond imagining. Many of these residents live their entire lives in a 1 or 2 square mile radius. The police rarely get out of their cars because they are outgunned.

I remember touring Cabrini Green and the Robert Taylor homes for a semester. It is what is what turned me into a "radical leftist" today.
I can understand her twisted rage and yes, self loathing--but I can disagree with her without dismissing her.

Our country has largely failed these inner city people. But they are merely the canary in the coal mine, and corporate Amerika is hell bent on turning this entire country into a ghetto of self loathing slaves.

It was clear from the opening and all the way until the pathetic ending that the caller had an agenda. She raced through her comments like a rabid, snarling freight train, as if reading from a script.

I was hoping Ed would see right through the theatrics, the pretension, and NOT take her too seriously as she most clearly didn't deserve it, and wasn't dealing honestly with him. and his listeners.

He was very polite, and didn't wade into any verbal game, or contradict her, just thanked her, and there was a break, real, not pretended, and the show went on.

The second I saw this thread I took a long good look at the poster's name, and felt beyond a shadow of a doubt someone was trying to legitimize what was clearly a calculated call for political reasons.

Who would want to spend ANY time doing this?

Thanks for your post.

The only way to change me is maybe blow my brains out
Stuck in the middle of the game to get the pain out
Pray to my God everyday but he don't listen
The poverty bothers me but mama's working wonders in the kitchen
Listen I can hear her crying in the bedroom
Praying for money we never think would she be dead soon
Am I wrong for wishing I was somewhere else
At 13 can't feed myself
Can I blame daddy 'cause he left me
Wish he would've hugged me
Too much like him 'til my mama don't love me
On my own at a early age gettin' paid
And I'm strapped so I'll never be afraid
Where did I go astray I'm hanging in the back streets
Running with G's and dope fiends will they jack me?
Can't turn back my eyes on the prize
I got nothing to lose
Everybody gotta die
Say good-bye to the bad guy
That one you ****ed when you passed by
Buck buck (gunshots) from a Glock
Tempured glass fly
Do or Die walk a mile in my shoes
And you'd be crazy too
With nothing to lose

I got nothing to lose

Got nothing to lose 5x
Nothing to lose

[Verse 2]
I thank the Lord for my many blessings
Though I'm stressin' keep a vest for protection
From the barrel of the Smith & Wesson
And all my *****s in the pen'
Here we go again
Ain't nothing separating us from a mack 10
Born in the ghetto as a hustla older
Straight soldier bucking at them bustas
No matter how you try *****s never die
We just retaliate with hate then we multiply
See me striking down the block hittin' co'ners
Mobbin' like a mutha****a livin' like I want to
Ain't no stoppin' at the red lights I'm sideways
Thug Life mutha****a criiime pays
Let the cops put they lights on
Chase me *****
Zig-zaggin' through the freeway
Race me *****
In a high speed chase with the law
The realest mutha****a that you ever saw
I'm livin' raw 'til they bury me don't worry me
I'm high livin' like I ain't afraid to die
And you could walk a mile in my shoes
And you'd be crazy too

[Verse 3 ]
Ain't no escape from a deadly fate
And everyday there's a million black bodies put away
I'm startin' to lose hope
It seems everybody's on dope
Mama told me to leave 'cause she was broke
Sometimes I choke on the indo
Peepin' out the window alone on my own

Got no love from the household I'm out cold
In the streets give me mutha****ing peace
I got nothing to lose
And something to prove
What do I do live Thug Life ***** stay true
I wonder when they kill me
Is there a Heaven for a real G
Lord forgive me if you feel me
'Cause all my life I was dirt broke
With no hope li'l skinny mutha****a wantin' dough
I hated cutting suckers with my razor blade
But everyday it's a struggle to get major paid
Anyway it's so hard on a ***** in this city
No pity and ain't no love for the scrubs that be buyin' time
If you could walk a mile in my shoes you'd be crazy too
With nothing to lose

For the record she doesn’t speak for me, as a black man, I hate the guns and violence too however I don’t blame the entire race for the miss deeds of a few. The same reason I don’t color all white people as racist, it is simply not fair, she is a tard IMO

I suggested that rather than alerting, and then whining about the failure of a jury to hide the forbidden word, simply posting a suggestion in response to your post that you not use "tard" or other variations on the pejorative use of "retard" would be a more effective way to communicate.

This has had several good effects. More people read your post, for whatever reason, and certainly you would agree that is a good thing. You in turn have agreed that using the dreaded "tard" will be avoided in the future. I think that is a good thing as it supports my side in "Word War III, Rise of the Serial Alerters". I have been advocating for a lot less alerting and a lot less fainting over "words we find offensive", and that instead the offended should simply start a dialog with the offender.

And no, "bitch", even though it is now commonplace, will also cause an uproar.

Would you be so kind as to do so? I noticed that someone alerted on your post without first giving you the opportunity to change your use of the term "tard." As you've probably figured out, it's one of those words that causes pain to people who have a developmentally delayed loved one.

Might I suggest "shithead" or "asshole" or "fucking jerk" instead? Those are much more descriptive, and generally go over much better.

She better hope nothing ever happens to her, because she is wearing black: her skin. Racists don't care what you wear, or how you act. I doubt Emmett Till was wearing a hoodie, or wearing his pants hanging down. George Zimmerman didn't go after Trayvon Martin because he was wearing a hoodie. He went after him, because he was black. If Trayvon Martin were white, and he was wearing a hoodie, George Zimmerman would have never followed him. Even so, that doesn't give someone the right to kill another person, because of what they are wearing. This caller sounds like one of those black republicans who is ashamed of their race, and wishes she was white. She's just like Allen West, and other black republicans, who the right-wingers use to attack blacks. She had all the racist sterotypes down, too. I wouldn't be surprised if some right-wingers put her up to it. Stupid bitch.

Listen to her voice then yourself. Order a podcast here. I've listened to a lot of Liberal radio (mostly Thom Hartmann-the best by far) and its pretty easy to ID the voices. Most of the time they dont even say theyre black. And the black callers are often the most well-informed callers of all. There are a few regulars that are very sharp.

that she's black just by the "sound" of her voice. Exactly how does black "sound"? You can't be sure of anything unless you actually saw her, which is impossible on a call-in radio show. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she were a plant; the RW, the NRA and the GOA are desperate now to smear and bash Trayvon so as to justify his murder and protect and further their own agenda. What better way to do that than through a call-in radio show where no one can actually see or verify you? Sounds to me like you're trying to legitimize what this caller was ranting about, which is truly sad no matter what your race is.

Thu Mar 29, 2012, 05:35 PM

Had the woman been sincere, why would you attempt to rub it in the faces of DU members? "Ouch?" Really?

You should spend some time explaining why you would imagine the call would be hurtful to anyone, and, if so, why would you feel obligated to discuss it?

It was a conspicuous effort to air all the hostilities and hatreds only bourn in the "minds" of the most bedraggled, bitter, hate-filled racist WHITE people.

Can't believe this is what you come to DU to do.

I heard the show, as well, and spotted her immediately as utterly bogus, from her screeching opening, calling black people "animals."

Take some time to consider how much you care if people trust you in your future posts.

I thought maybe I shouldnt before I posted it. But I thought to myself why try to hide what most people are thinking. It will only fester if it isnt discussed. This lady had a lot of guts for airing what a lot of people are thinking. I work in an inner city mall store that gets every age and race in there and I never have any problems with the black kids any more than the whites.

One black lady gave me hell though because I didnt get her order fast enough so she wanted her money back. Almost all the kids are very well behaved in fact. And lots of them, white and black, wear hoodies and pants down low. I'm sure the ghettos of Chicago is a different world though.

Its underfunded crumbling bad schools and the drug war, which must be solved.

Thu Mar 29, 2012, 06:16 PM

From what I've heard, reaction is largely very strongly against what appears clearly to be a racist murder.

Black people are NOT responsible for this child's murder. Period.

The fact you'd attempt to put that one over on others is mind-boggling.

A black woman gave you a hard time for not performing a simple task. I hope you recovered.

You work at a mall, therefore you know all about black people. Is that an intelligent bit of logic? Maybe your perceptions are skewed from the first.

How do you explain the use of "ouch" in your opening? Who is hurt? What is injured? Your credibility?

82. Wrong! This IS a federal case & it IS about racism!
Thu Mar 29, 2012, 07:23 PM
Mar 2012

Despite whatever questionable rantings you might hear on talk-radio, most people who have honestly examined the limited facts which have been presented in the shooting of Trayvon Martin do think that there has been a serious injustice committed down in Sanford, Florida.

There are a whole bunch of people who may be blamed now, Zimmerman for his suspected racial-profiling and subsequent shooting of an unarmed child, the Sanford PD for dismissing this murder as acceptable "self-defense", that county prosecutor who conducted one piss-poor investigation of a violent death, the city manager who supposedly has "trust" in his police department...hell, let's take it right on up to the Governor of Florida, to assign responsibility for this disgusting cover-up, BUT, in no way, shape, or form can anyone imply that "blacks" have brought this tragedy on themselves!

Trayvon Martin wasn't even wearing any hoodie when Zimmerman zeroed in on him as a "suspicious" person...suspicious for walking while black is what that was...Trayvon told his girlfriend that he put his hoodie on, AFTER he knew that he was being followed by the whacked-out vigilante, Zimmerman.

I wear a black hoodie; I have worn a black hoodie this entire winter as my regular coat, long before the murder in Florida. Gee, sometimes I even wrap my head in a red bandana, along with that black hoodie. I am not a member of some "violent culture", no Bloods kinship, no drugs, nor dole, tho sometimes my worn out britches do slip down a bit. Rants like that woman gave, posts such as yours, are what most people are truly sick of...blaming any victim for their own death is what is truly embarrassing!

But maybe not, as it pertains to the authenticity of the caller.

However, she sounds like a few older mountain people, saying the same thing about the youth of Appalachia.

The same exact thing: down to clothes, music, drugs and dole....

When young people have no hope, they create a culture that has some order and security. No matter where they are. No matter their skin hue.

To say all black people in America live in hopeless places - like the Chicago ghetto- is stupid. The black people in my family are educated, high achievers iving in suburbia, or living in Africa part of the year, or going to college. Had I seen Trayvon on the street, I would have had no more fear of him than of my own son who is that age, who also might be sporting a hoodie. I would have taken him for a student, a kid.

A hard life for you doesn't justify the murder of someone you don't know. It doesn't cure anybody's pain or give any real satisfaction even to the racist. Otherwise, all the racists ranting about the case on rightwing, backwash talk shows would just gloat and let it go.

The caller is either a plant or - like the older, judgmental types in Appalachia - she doesn't understand the dearth of opportunity the younger generation faces, living in a nation that would rather build prisons than schools. She is too stupid to see that a racially motivated murder won't solve her problems.

She's not alone.

or whatever it is called are worse in neighborhoods like that woman's, worse in communities with gangs than they are anywhere else. They exonerate the powerful and cruel and make victims of their weaker, kinder neighbors.

Zimmerman should be tried as should murderers in her neighborhood.

That is true at all levels of society. A president who attacks a country that has not attacked us should also face a jury. It's just wrong for the mighty, the well armed to shoot or drop bombs on those who are weaker and not armed at all.

It does not take more than common sense to see that. She is absolutely right. There is a lot of bullying going on, and a lot of it is perpetrated by poor people against poor people. The excessive noise in some communities is an expression of the same attitude of disrespect for the rights of others that causes a bully to kill his or her victim. The caller has a point in my view. She is mistaken if she is siding with Zimmerman. He was the one with the gun.

I hope that Ed Schultz explained to her that she is like Trayvon's parents -- a victim of the lack of respect for the rights of others that is so prevalent in our country.

Sat Mar 31, 2012, 07:49 PM
Mar 2012

A lot of teens are put down these days, white and black and hispanic. Hoodies and loud music and big pants does not make one a drug dealing, packing thug. A hoodie should not get you killed. That is like saying long hair should get you harassed as it did my brother in the early 90's. He was a sweet, responsible teenager but was treated really harshly by some adults because he liked his metal music and long hair. Some thought he was a Satanist. We had a good laugh about it recently now that we are all grown up at 36 and 39. What one's appearance is matters little. It is their actions first and Trayvon did not seem like a gang member that carried a gun and dealt drugs. Sorry.
