When it was discovered years ago that AT&T and Verizon were breaking the law by helping the government spy on citizens without a warrant, the laws were simply changed to give telecom carriers immunity. Now with several battling variations of NSA "reform" bills in process, The Guardian notes that the White House is pushing to ensure that all of the bills contain provisions protecting telcos from legal harm for their ongoing cooperation in such programs:
quote:In a statement of principles privately delivered to lawmakers some weeks ago to guide surveillance reforms, the White House said it wanted legislation protecting any person who complies in good faith with an order to produce records from legal liability for complying with court orders for phone records to the government once the NSA no longer collects the data in bulk.
