I see a Corvette go by. A few seconds later, a guy walks by, pauses to toss something into the trash can next to me, and mutters as he stares after the Corvette, "A freakin' 'vette? I'm an independent contractor, and that guy paid me 500 bucks for 3 months' work and he shows up in a 'vette?" The Corvette owner is a one-percenter, maybe?

(30,947 posts)And neither of them were 1-percenters, though they did earn comfortable living wages. One was an ex-boyfriend, who would loan me his Corvette at times. But this was in the '70s and '80s when I guess a person did not have to be rich to own a Corvette.

(5,032 posts)You could buy a Corvette with an autoworker job then, but not now.

(7,745 posts)Why do you think that it takes over $300,000 a year to be able to afford a $76,000 car?
The base coupe starts around $45K. Still expensive but far from $76K. You can get a used one that looks brand new for less than the cost of a minivan, and are way more fun.
Don't be hatin' on 'Vettes -- they're built entirely in the USA by union labor.

(15,996 posts)Did the guy agree to do 3 months work for $500 or did the guy with the Vette stiff him out of the rest of what he owed him? :shurg:

I have a Infiniti G35. Does that make me a one percenter?
and the insurance you pay on it are not in the same orbit as the cost of a Corvette and what it costs to insure them.
By that logic, owning a car at all would make you part of the 1%.

(41,692 posts)The cost was pretty dang close ...
Point is---just because you have a nice car don';t mean you're a once percenter.
Dumb fucking Op.

(39,961 posts)Isn't anywhere near the neighborhood of the cost of insurance for a corvette, and if you have a corvette, you also have to have another vehicle because a two seater is not practical for certain things like grocery shopping, or picking up someone at the airport (Ever tried to pick someone up with luggage from the airport? I have.)
And, no offense, but your car, while nice, isn't all that, and can be obtained used for a lot less than a Vette. They hold their value remarkably, and you haven't mentioned whether you bought yours off the lot or used.
It's just not a comparable situation, no matter how much of a status symbol you may believe your vehicle is.

(30,151 posts)You could drop about 30-40K on a good used Vette as well..
The difference is on the high end you can pay upwards of 150K on a Vette when you start getting every single bell and whistle...
So it is comparable, Vette insurance slightly higher but not enough to make a huge difference. Are you just looking to argue
OP is kind of stupid anyway. Part of a conversation by a random person from another random person that was put on the Intertubes so we can fight about the price of a Vette. LOL
Got to love the modern age

(39,961 posts)If it's picking a fight to state the obvious, yes, I picked a fight.
If it gives people kicks to say "Oooo, I own a G35!" or "Oooo, I own a Vette!" well okay then.
I'll quit now, because you are right, there are better ways to utilize our time than to trouble ourselves over whether a G35 owner's car is more "status-y" than a Corvette owner's car.
