The BLM says the incident occurred on I-15 near Nephi about 11 a.m. Tuesday when two men wearing hoods pulled up alongside a marked BLM truck and held up a sign that read, "You need to die." KUTV-TV reports one of the suspects held what appeared to be a handgun.
The BLM worker slowed down and let the dark blue Dodge truck with an extended cab pass before exiting the interstate at Mills. He says he couldn't get a license plate number because it was covered in duct tape.

(25,966 posts)I found this while doing an image search for 'BLM standoff.' I'm not sure if it was generated by somebody sympathetic to Occupy, or to Bundy. It doesn't really matter, I think we're all in the same classroom.

(13,081 posts)Culturally, the two places are sharing a fence line.
Geographic distances in this part of the country are tricky, because the distances everywhere are vast. Clark County, NV, for instance -- which holds Las Vegas and Casa del Bundy -- is a tad bit smaller than Massachusetts. The rural areas across Utah and Southern/Eastern Nevada, and much of Northern Arizona, all sort of make up one geographical location, which, because of scale, appears to be much larger than it actually is.
But mostly it's the Mormon thing. No to my Mormon friends, most of whom are not batshit crazy, but know what I'm talking about when I describe elders prophesying.

(34,661 posts)Just a matter of time and these two will be in custody. That stretch of I-15 has one of best Trooper's patrolling it,and if they were local's,their toast. You just don't piss off the Game Wardens. They will always find their threats to their personnel.

(3,539 posts)As nuts as these people are I wouldn't put it pas them for this to be a secondary objective.
They have already decided that women and children getting shot would be a good PR stunt.
The problem is that you are correct. Doing nothing simply empowers them. It encourages other fools to take actions outside of what should be expected in an advanced society.
No one should believe for a single moment that these terrorists will know when or where to stop.
It appears that the longer this goes on the less likely that there will be a peaceful solution.

(25,966 posts)The right answer is to put these thugs behind bars. Based on their behavior so far, I get the feeling that they aren't going to go quietly. Hopefully I'm being too pessimistic.

(3,539 posts)We are not dealing with a bunch of rowdy school boys here. Not only are they well armed, they appear to be well financed.
Worse is that unlike an inner city gang there are enough fools in the bleachers that they can muster some popular support.
There is allays irony. These would be the first people to carry on about "Muslin Teerists", still I have heard of no such group advocating sending in the women and children first.
As much as I would like to see a peaceful resolve a dark part of me says damn the martyrs, send in the armed drones before this comes to my neighborhood.

As it stands now all one has to do is get a bunch of friends with guns together and you can do what ever you want!
Bundy and his supporters should all either be dead or in jail right now.

(1,571 posts)I am just fascinated by this evolving social experiment. The research question seems to be, "Where is the boundary between democracy and posse comitatus?" As fearsome as it may be, there must be processes, first to enforce lawful behavior, and second to identify enemies of the legitimate state. These issues are conflated here, but they are different aspects of the same complex problem. In both cases the process and consequence must be clear and communicated...and I will concede diplomatic steps towards the appropriate end (for both issues). In the former, I see subpoenas. If subpeonas are denied, anyone standing in the way becomes a party to a crime. If they refuse the process with threats of group violence they become organized crime. If they spout insurrection, they become traitors and terrorists. There is a most peaceful way through the process, but there is no guarantee that peace will prevail. In the end, if they make the case that they are sovereign, they must be removed. Not swat, not paramilitary, but (and I hate to say this) military is tasked with removing enemy combatants...Because they have framed the issue in terms of undeclared civil war. Boundaries are set and conditions laid out. We do not negotiate with terrorists, we should exact submission from enemy forces acting within our borders. The perimeter contracts and until the very last square foot, they have the option to surrender peacefully. I am a pacifist within the luxury of a democratic state. But when an armed militia intercedes to superimpose its own government in any part of that democracy, the context for peace falls away for everyone but the martyrs.
As I said, I am fascinated to see how the country negotiates this small but existential challenge to its common weal.
