Some conservatives have always been pretty touchy about Tim Tebow.
When the former Heisman Trophy winner took the NFL by storm a couple years ago with his late game heroics and his public displays of Christian faith, some on the right were quick to defend the quarterback from occasional mockery.
"Tebowing" was all the rage, with even fellow NFL players mimicking the quarterback's ritual of bowing on one knee to pray. A sketch on "Saturday Night Live" imagined Jesus paying Tebow a visit in the locker room.
Some didn't find the jokes too funny, and even employed cries of a double-standard. One Fox Sports columnist, for example, argued that nobody would ridicule Tebow if he practiced Islam.

(65,212 posts)Tebow hung around with a breathless fan base and ESPN focus like mad long after it was clear he couldn't play NFL caliber football.
Nobody wrote "OMG" in a tweet the moment he got drafted.
Nobody cared how he was being treated when he got DRAFTED IN THE FIRST ROUND! How bad is the treatment when a guy gets drafted that early?
This is just whining.

(9,186 posts)was drafted, he was allowed to play and he showed without a doubt he did not have the SKILLS to be an NFL quarterback. Not even a back-up even after all the "Praise Jesus" fanfare, he could not preform to NFL standards and lost his job.
Apparently it wasn't the gay-loving crowd who did-in Tebow, it was God. Apparently, he isn't interested in giving Tebow skills to win games and bring people to the Lawd thru the NFL. Get over it or BLAME GOD not me!

(5,169 posts)Richard Dawkins to atheist rally: 'Show contempt' for faith
Mar 24, 2012
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/Religion/post/2012/03/-atheists-richard-dawkins-reason-rally/1
About 20,000 atheists gathered within shouting distance of the Washington Monument on Saturday for a Reason Rally hell-bent on damning religion and mocking beliefs.
~ snip ~
Then Dawkins got to the part where he calls on the crowd not only to challenge religious people but to "ridicule and show contempt" for their doctrines and sacraments, including the Eucharist, which Catholics believe becomes the body of Christ during Mass.
~ snip ~
Outrage was the parlance of the day, however, for many speakers, including David Silverman, Reason Rally organizer and American Atheists president.
~ snip ~
Silverman may have gone a bit further in his rhetoric than he intended. In a thundering call for "zero tolerance" for anyone who disagrees with or insults atheism, Silverman proclaimed, "Stand your ground!"

The path to peace, understanding, and inclusiveness is through anger, mocking and obscene insults. Less mamby pamby, more red faced rage. When someone slaps your face, don't turn the other cheek: hit them with a barrage of verbal two by fours!
When Christians start to realize that sky daddy/virgin baby worship is a losing proposition, that they are being ridiculed by their intellectual superiors, they will either convert to Atheism, or at least they will learn to shut up, cower and hide their religion. Either way, it is a victory for free thought.

(13,468 posts)Tebow was worshiped as a demigod. He had a Super Bowl commercial to push his anti-choice agenda.
I watch SEC sports, since that's the conference Kentucky plays in and I can tell you the SEC fans from all teams worshiped Tebow for his Fundi-ness. No other opposing player got such worship, he was white and Fundy so sports fans in the SEC thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I was so sick of hearing how wonderful he was that I felt relief when he graduated. Tebow was ridiculed because he was made such a big deal of, and people outside the south (and a few of us in the south) just got sick to death of him being put on a pedestal.
I keep seeing Michael Sam looked down on for being gay. The media is making a HUGE deal of it, but without the worship. They seem almost stunned that a highly talented football player could be gay. I feel like all Michael Sam wants is a shot at the NFL, like any other player that was a star on his college team. He's not asking for a Super Bowl commercial to promote taking away someone else s rights.
And something else I notice, southern fundies certainly don't go all ga-ga over African American players in the SEC who are very religious. They don't promote and worship them like they did Tebow.

(999 posts)Tebow is a great athlete who had mediocre quarterbacking skills. Many NFL scouts said that Tebow would have made a vey good tight end or even a slot receiver because of his athletic skills. However Tebow clearly stated that he would only play QB in the NFL and after the novelty wore off he was cut by the Jets and the Patriots. Michael Sam was SEC defensive player of the year. He beat out other standouts from bigger schools like LSU, Alabama, Auburn and USC to get that honor. He should have gone no later than the 3rd round. The Rams have gotten a player who is motivated and will give his best every Sunday and that is all you can ask from a teammate. Good Luck to him.
