China, Russia on verge of gas deal

BEIJING (AP) — China plans to sign a multibillion-dollar deal to buy Russian gas during a visit by President Vladimir Putin next week despite U.S. pressure to avoid undermining sanctions on Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.

Washington has appealed to Beijing to avoid making business deals with Russia, though American officials acknowledge the pressing energy needs of China, the world's second-largest economy.

Negotiations that began more than a decade ago had stalled over price. But analysts say Moscow, isolated over its role in Ukraine, faces pressure to make concessions in exchange for an economic and political boost.

"We are still exchanging views with Moscow and we will try our best to ensure that this contract can be signed and witnessed by the two presidents during President Putin's visit to China," a deputy Chinese foreign minister, Cheng Guoping, told reporters on Thursday.

Putin's visit to China is also likely to highlight the diverging fortunes of the two powers. China is on track to overtake the U.S. as the world's biggest economy in the next decade and is increasingly assertive in political relations with its neighbors. Russia's economy is reeling from its dispute with the West over Ukraine's tilt toward the European Union, a shift that inflamed Moscow's insecurities about declining influence.

The two countries established an exchange rate back in De. 2010 which thus completely bypasses the US$.

Elvis had it right all those years ago.

And who is the winner in this conflict? China.

Our little conflict in Ukraine just helped quench China's insatiable thirst for energy.

that has even a remote relationship to oil and gas and other resources we need, using the MILITARY to do so, or 'proxy wars' meaning using mercs and other infiltrators, iow, soldiers from some of our 'allies' like Qatar and Saudi Arabia 'on the ground' has cost billions.

China meantime has been making deals, not spending on the military to get what it wants as the Soviet Union did and eventually collapsed.

The US has squandered so many opportunities to remain the world's strongest economy by operating like an Empire.

It will be our own fault when China ends up as numero uno. And what will that mean for the world? I guess the MIC and its enablers never thought about that.

And you've probably read that the Chinese are now in Afghanistan signing deals for mineral extraction.

They come in after we make the mess and sign deals with the people we've angered.

everywhere we chose to try to do it militarily. We turned this country over to morons, imo. And unless something happens soon to change that, China is set to dominate the world economically and maybe even militarily, and they did with the help of the morons we allowed to take over this country. We have squandered the enormous power and opportunity we had to lead the world to be a better place. I hope it isn't too late to turn things around.

Russia gets a good customer with the money to pay. China gets a good supplier with plenty of gas.

The more gas China buys from Russia the less it buys from other suppliers who then can sell their gas to Europe. Europeans may have to pay a little more for their gas due to higher transportation costs but they may benefit from less politics and more dependability in the flow of gas.
