Reports: Donald Sterling refuses to pay fine, threatens to sue NBA

(CNN) -- Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has sent a letter to the National Basketball Association telling the league he won't pay his $2.5 million fine and rejecting his lifetime ban, according to multiple media reports.

Sports Illustrated and USA Today, citing unnamed sources, reported the letter also threatens the NBA with a lawsuit if Sterling's punishment for making racist remarks, handed down by
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in April, is not rescinded.

"We reject your demand for payment," the letter says, according to Sports Illustrated.

a social one.

All the things that Sterling has done over the years, and this last thing is what everyone made a huge deal about. Players kept taking checks and playing all over the league knowing Sterling was around.

The league is going to fine him(the league usually does that when needed, at least when it comes to players and coaches), ban him(a rare step), and might try to force him to sell the team(an even more rare step). Because of something he said, in his private life. Of course a guy in Sterling's position is going to fight that.

I knew it was going to. He is going to fight to the bitter end. His wife is not going to give up her portion of the team. This will go on for years. I don't know what can be done about it. Last thing we need is for him to sue the NBA and they win. That would be a disaster.

I wouldn't expect the notorious millionaire slumlord to have any sense of shame whatsoever.

Sterling's team can join the CBA, where his team is worth about 2% of an NBA franchise. And there's no income from a TV deal. Good luck with that, Donald!

edit: oops, the CBA went bankrupt and folded in 2009. I guess Donald is SOL.

The DA there is a Democrat, not that it matters, since there are no charges that could be filed.

against the girlfriend that illegally recorded that private conversation without Sterling's knowledge. She should be jailed.
Also, Sterling should sue her into oblivion for, again, breaking the law. An example needs to be made of her. You can't record a private conversation for the purposes of hurting someone. The lesson here is that you might succeed in hurting them, but you are going to be in a cage for a while.
It might deter someone from trying this crap in the future.

From Cal. Penal Code § 637.2, she could be fined $2500 and in county jail for a year. Also, there is this nifty little clause:

(c) Except as proof in an action or prosecution for violation of
this section, no evidence obtained in violation of this section shall
be admissible in any judicial, administrative, legislative, or other
proceeding.

Which might mean the NBA can't use it against him when they sue him, or he sues them.
