LONDON Its the beard that divided a continent.
The victory of whiskered drag queen Conchita Wurst in the Eurovision Song Contest had celebrities from Nigella Lawson to Russell Brand posting bearded selfies on the Internet in tribute and Russian men snapping clean-shaven pictures in protest.
For millions of viewers, the annual Eurovision show is a cheesy music competition renowned for its camp, kitsch and electro beats. But the nation-based contest is also a potent mix of patriotism and politics in bubblegum wrapping.
Wursts win has exposed a divide between Europes progressives and conservatives that British tabloid The Sun cheekily described Monday as the Furred World War.
The statuesque brunette with the soaring voice of a diva and a full dark beard called her first-place finish in Saturdays contest a victory for tolerance and respect. Austrian President Heinz Fischer said it was not just a victory for Austria, but above all for diversity and tolerance in Europe.

This shows that the Russian jury placed Wurst 11th, but the public put her 3rd.

So the huffing and puffing by the Russian politicians wasn't reflected among the population.
(Also showing notable differences between the jury and phone votes in several countries - the Polish entry, performed with extremely unsubtle buxom milkmaid dancers and double entendres in the lyrics - eg British jury: last; British public - first).

In Moscow, gay activists undeterred by 2013s ugly federal law to prohibit the distribution of gay propaganda have filed an application to the mayors office notifying officials of their intent to host a Conchita Wurst march of bearded people to open the gay parade season. The march will take place on May 27, the 21st anniversary of abolishing criminal prosecution for homosexual relations in Russia.
Sandy Rios of the conservative American Family Association described Wurst on the Right Wing Watch radio show as a conqueror who is under a delusion and will not prevail.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, head of Russias Liberal Democratic Party, was perhaps the most incensed. Its the end of Europe. It has turned wild, he said. Fifty years ago, the Soviet army occupied Austria. We made a mistake in freeing Austria. We should have stayed there. Russias deputy prime minister, Dmitry Rogozin, expressed his disgust on Twitter by declaring that Eurovision showed supporters of European integration their European future: a bearded girl.

Good luck to Russians planning a Conchita march on May 27. It will be interesting to see if the Moscow mayor's office allows the march and how peacefully it comes off. Just keep Russia's deputy prime minister and Mr. Zhirinovsky as far from that march as possible.
