As if someone would travel hundreds or thousands of miles to topple a government and be stymied by rain?

Yeah ... that's the kind of militia that the founders envisioned.

Weather records from that time and area say it was warmer than normal for that time of year.

Just more propaganda, like the painting showing Washington in a boat standing up while crossing the Delaware.

Or the cherry tree.

Or the popular but bogus painting of all those guys signing the Declaration together on July 4th.

30. The problem wasn't that it was unusually cold, but rather . . .

. . . that it was typically (for southeast PA in Winter) wet and damp, and the fact that the enlisted men in the Continental Army were ill-fed and ill-clothed for the weather they faced, and were housed in cramped, dank, windowless quarters with poor ventilation. There were outbreaks of Typhoid, typhus, smallpox, dysentery, and pneumonia, and nearly 2,500 men died by the end of that Winter as a result. And of course, many of these men were conscripts who had been pressed into service against their will in the first place. Washington and his officers, however, endured no such hardship.

Howard Zinn, in his "People's History of the United States," notes historian Edmund Morgan's characterization of the Revolution:

Edmund Morgan sums up the class nature of the Revolution this way: "The fact that the lower ranks were involved in the contest should not obscure the fact that the contest itself was generally a struggle for office and power between members of an upper class: the new against the established."

To be sure, the story of Valley Forge was likely propagandized over the years, but the hardships endured by the lower ranking soldiers were quite real, and we shouldn't lose sight of that. (Nor should we lose sight of the fact that then, as now, war plans were mostly hatched by a wealthy, ruling elite, and the bulk of the sacrifice was borne by the powerless, largely even voiceless, folks from the lower economic strata.)

The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
