http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304831304579546312161483266THE VERY WORD "hemline" can summon visions of midcentury women's fashion and the Byzantine bylaws that simply had to be followed whenever imperious French designers raised and lowered skirt lengths. Those crazy dames, right?
Guys, you're in the same game. For most of the past two decades, men's shorts have barely merited the name, dropping so far down the calf that Linnaeus would have stuck them in the pants family. Call them what you wantknickerbockers, breeches, clam diggersthe one thing they haven't been is particularly short.
Finally that's changed. And given how change in the menswear world is measuredthink millimeters per decade rather than centimeters per season for women's wearshorts are shortening quickly. In the past few years, the low-water-mark length of a 15-inch-or-so inseam receded to knee-length (11 inches), then a knee-baring 9 inches, then to a quadriceps-exposing 7 inches and on to the newly fashionable thigh-flaunting 5 inches. If men's shorts were a glacier in Greenland, scientists would be freaking out.
<Snip>
Finally. I would never buy shorts because they were so long. Just work cut offs. May have to finally buy some "store bought" ones.
Edited to add a note. Women's shorter skirts (mini skirts) was said to herald the liberal era. I look back on when mens shorts went almost to the ankles as when conservatives got power. Does this mean we are in a move to a more liberal era.

(3,447 posts)I don't think I want most men's shorts getting that short again.
If they do, we may have to watch for the resurgence of the porn 'stache.

(16,847 posts)I wear boxers, anyway, so I couldn't wear those short ones. My underwear would be sticking out the bottom. I don't really follow fashion trends and fads. I wear whatever I like and whatever is the most comfortable for me. People are very informal where I live, so you can basically wear whatever you want to wear and nobody will care.

(10,893 posts)but the latter 2 look rough. I think the 7-inch shorts look uncomfortably tight around the groin area, and 5 inches almost looks like daisy-dukes. I'd get laughed or stared at if I wear either of those in public.

No really though, that's been a gay style for almost ten years. TBH, I always hated it. You have to have fairly toned legs to pull it off right. 90% of people don't. Just a fact of life.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Homophobic weirdness.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat May 17, 2014, 10:21 AM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I'll give a pass since Fearless is gay, but, I think the comment sounds like self-loathing bullshit. Maybe Fearless thinks 'do as I say, not as I do' works outside the LGBT forum. I probably should have voted to hide. I won't make this decision twice. Any more disparaging 'Gaaayyy' remarks, outside the LGBT forum, will get a hide in the future.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Poster states he (or she) is gay. If true, how is this "homophobic weirdness" and not observation, potentially?
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No it is not. I am gay as well and see noghing wrong with this post.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Really, someone actually alerted on this? Even with the disclaimer? Fearless is one of the best voices for the lgtb community on this board, and was clearly kidding. Sheesh.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
Fearless
(18,421 posts)I'll thank the alerter for looking out for and defending against homophobia, that's very kind of them. But definitely not self loathing. I just don't take myself overly seriously. But again thanks for having our backs to them add as well, it's very kind. And i will say I'm flattered by the final comment. That made my day!
