...but we don't live in a police state, according to some on DU!
Council Bluffs, IA -- A Pottawattamie County man says he's still recovering from a brutal beating he took at the hands of the SWAT Team. But even investigators agree false claims started the whole incident. Now, the man is suing the sheriff's department for using excessive force.
Law enforcement got a complaint saying he was harassing someone. Instead of speaking to the alleged suspect, he claims the sheriff's office turned him into a victim.
52-year-old John Hytrek, who lives with Parkinson's Disease, was working on a tractor outside his shop in his driveway in August 2012 at his home in Pottawattamie County. Very suddenly, nearly a dozen swat members from the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office jumped out of a van in his driveway.
Hytrek says they tackled him slamming his face on a tire machine and the ground, and they continued to strike him. He says he was then punched at least 5 times in the head and numerous times on his body. They also allege a sniper was set up, surveilling him from across the street.
Hytrek says he previously had told a relative to leave his property. That relative tried to retaliate, by telling police he was making threats. The accuser had even been convicted of previously making false statements.

some observers still don't get it. Some cops love brutality, certainly not all, but certainly enough. To me, I think the militarization of police forces is tragic. It's an us/them environment, not good at all for a democracy. I don't know where it's headed, but it's very uncomfortable.
