They passed a medical marijuana bill. It wasn't the best, and is too restrictive but it passed, so it was a good step. They cut some taxes to help poor Minnesotans better cope with the slowly recovering economy. They passed a minimum wage bill that gets us out of the hole of being one of the lowest minimum wage states in the country. They passed a funding bill that will improve education funding, something that has been sorely needed. They passed a measure that forces state-funded laboratories to release experimental animals for adoption after the research is done, rather than killing them. Our Democratic Governor is signing all of these bills.
In 2010, Minnesota elected a legislature controlled by Republicans in both houses. After that legislature put a voter ID law and a ban on marriage equality amendment on the ballot in 2012, the voters of Minnesota returned the majority in both houses to Democrats. The next year, 2013, marriage equality became law in our state and the Democrats created a budget that produced a billion-dollar surplus on the books. The voters spoke and returned Minnesota to being the caring, progressive state it should be. There's still work to do, but things are moving in the right direction. We made more progress this year, as well.
What this demonstrates is that getting Democrats to the polls is how we get rid of Republican legislative majorities, both in state legislatures and in Congress. In 2010, Minnesota screwed up. Voter turnout was dismal and the Republicans won control of our state legislature. Two years later, we fixed that.
Now, in 2014, there's another election. We need to maintain control of our state legislature and add at least two new Democratic seats to our Congressional delegation. All across the country, this year's mid-term elections demand a maximum turnout of Democrats. If we can do that, we'll get Congress back and be able to pass progressive legislation for President Obama to sign. Then, in 2016, we can build on that and put the Republicans into a small minority party status. Let's do that, everyone!

(34,661 posts)the levers of power. When the Rethugs had control, the levers were being pulled by the Fundies from Southern and Southwestern parts of the state. Talk about TeaBillies, what a group of back ward Stupids. Now it appears things are in the hands of mostly very progressive folks from the Twin City area, were things really do happen. The Urban folks have been getting the shaft for many years and it did have a major effect on the economic under pinning of the state. With the present Political Alignment, infrastructure will finally be addressed. We learned decades ago that if you do not have things in place like schools and roads you might as well grab your ass and hang on cause your ride will be short and to the dust bin of history.
Sounds like the DFL from old making a come back. Go Gophers.

(146,336 posts)He has worked his ass off on all of the great legislation that has been passed during this session, and always seems to be out there in public, talking up the measures. I think he might be a great candidate for Governor one of these days. He's a hard working progressive from the uptown lake district in Minneapolis. State Senate District 61. I'm watching him closely to see if he can maintain this tough schedule. I'd like to see him as the next Governor of MN, I think.
