GOPer Suggested Voting Should Be Limited To Property Owners

DANIEL STRAUSS – MAY 20, 2014, 1:27 PM EDT

When he was on the campaign trail in 2012, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) suggested that only property owners should be allowed to vote.

Yoho made the suggestion when he was running for Congress. The comments were flagged by Right Wing Watch on Tuesday.

"I’ve had some radical ideas about voting and it’s probably not a good time to tell them, but you used to have to be a property owner to vote," Yoho said at a speaking event at the Berean Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida. The crowd responded with applause.

At the same event Yoho also said that early voting via absentee ballots are a "travesty" and praised Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) for reducing the number of early voting days from two weeks to eight days.

I feel like I say that a lot, but what? Really? A member of congress really believes that? That's just scary and horrible. Why not just say what he's really thinking, which is, "You used to have to be white to vote."

I'm pretty sure some enterprising liberal who owns a large piece of rural land could subdivide his or her runoff pond into business-size plots and sell deeds to it for a buck apiece.

It doesn't have to mean land. If you own the shopping cart you carry your stuff around in, it's your property, right?

We all own something, if it's just the shirt on our backs. Anyone who shows up the the polls in something other than his birthday suit should be ushered right in.
