The late-night duties for an Omaha couple grew by leaps and bounds after their pet bull mastiff surprised them with a litter of 23 puppies.
Lamar Williams, 25, said he knew his dog Little Mama was ready to pop when he took her for a walk the night of April 27.
He and his wife Shanesha, who have two little girls of their own, got up about 3:30 a.m. to be with Little Mama as she went into labor.
I thought it was done when she had eight puppies, and then there were eight more the next morning, said Lamar Williams, who is training to become a veterinary technician. But then she just kept popping them out and I said, 'Oh, my God!' "

(146,333 posts)I had the front door open because it was a warm day. I looked up from my reading to see a bloodhound coming in the front door. She walked over and laid down in front of the fireplace and just went to sleep. I'd never seen this dog before. She had quite obviously given birth to puppies not long before.
I went over to her and checked her collar for ID information. Sure enough, there was a tag on there with her address on it. I let her sleep for about half an hour and then woke her up and walked with her a couple of blocks to that address. I knocked on the door, and the nice woman who came to the door looked at this big old bloodhound and asked me, "Where did she show up this time?" I told her and she said that her dog had had 12 puppies a week earlier and sometimes just got tired of her motherly duties and wandered off to visit someone else. We walked mama dog to the back yard, where she laid back down and let her puppies nurse.
Poor mama dog! So much work to do.
