Clinton: Time running out for diplomacy with Iran

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jLOh1psAOujiR9duQH2EFkSskJKQ?docId=08855dd5467f42cbbfd9546eb32119ad

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made clear Saturday that time is running out for diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program and said talks aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon would resume in mid-April.

With speculation over a possible U.S. or Israel military attack adding urgency to the next round of discussions in Istanbul set for April 13, Clinton said Iran's "window of opportunity" for a peaceful resolution "will not remain open forever."
She also expressed doubt about whether Iran has any intention of negotiating a solution that satisfies the U.S., Israel and other countries that believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran contends the program is solely for peaceful energy and research purposes.

"We're going in with one intention: to resolve the international community's concerns about Iran's nuclear program," Clinton told reporters after attending a security conference in Saudi Arabia.
"Our policy is one of prevention, not containment. We are determined to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," America's top diplomat said.

"We enter into these talks with a sober perspective about Iran's intentions. It is incumbent upon Iran to demonstrate by its actions that it is a willing partner and to participate in these negotiations with an effort to obtain concrete results."
Her remarks followed President Barack Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. was moving ahead with penalties aimed at depriving Iran of oil revenue, while also working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states to ensure ample global petroleum supplies.

Time is running out? Which time is that? Time before Iran drops a bomb on us or time before the election so we can look tough on Iran?

I don't like this one bit. Here's Hans Blix:

“Negotiations with Iran, especially, will not be easy under any circumstances, but I suspect that they might be somewhat less difficult if the nuclear-weapon states could show that their requests are part of a broader effort to lead the world, including themselves, toward nuclear disarmament. Preventing further proliferation is essential, but it is not a recipe for success to preach to the rest of the world to stay away from the very weapons that nuclear states claim are indispensable to their own security.”

But hey, it's not like the guy was ever right about anything...

We're going to let the Israelis start the war & then we'll go in to help them punish the Iranians for defending themselves.

Look for a 30 years' war in Iran.

Classic. Let's answer him shall we?

I have worked for a poor person. He's disabled, lives next door to me. I have helped him move stuff, take care of his yard, cook meals for him, whatever he needs. And I don't get paid. My kids work for him and he pays them what little he can out of his disability. Wow a "job creator" who pays money he can't even afford. Yeah the poor suck

Let me ask a question to our new friend here.

Has a rich person ever done anything for you and not expected something in return? Do you call your millionaire buddy to help you move a couch? Or to help you build something? Or tend your yard?

When you see a homeless person on the street is it the rich man who tosses him a couple bucks? Or does the rich man get upset because this person is dirtying up the sidewalk?

Who is the better tipper? The rich man who has no fucking idea what it's like to live on tips or the poor man who managed to scrape a few bucks up to eat out for a change?

You want to do this for real? Start a thread on how the rich are the ones who keep this country going. I'd love to compare "notes" with you.

Awful to use that phrase. Fuck that shit 1000X, Madame Secretary.

On edit...except, she didn't use that phrase or anything close to it.

I'll read the story next time.

That's not close?

I just copied the article and title but that looks to me like a "time is running out" threat.

With the elections coming this year there will be a concerted effort to make Obama look strong against Iran.

It disturbs me that we have gotten to the point where aggressive foreign policy ie: "preventative attacks" has become the norm for both parties. That line where "she has doubts" that Iran will be willing to negotiate is pretty telling. They are gearing up.

Thankfully.

But I do share your distaste for the game that is being played here. Why not play up our own intelligence reports which show Iran is nowhere near nuclear capability? Election year bullshit and dangerous bullshit at that.

Been too long since we started a fresh pile of corpses in the Middle East.

I know we have several smoldering old piles we're still adding to, but... they're just not as sweet as fresh new one.

Rachel has made a hell of a case for a draft, even if the military don't want one.

My idea of one is the first in line for one are the children of military age of every elected member of government at all levels

that deferments are not for the poor. The chickenhawks want war, they just don't want themselves or their kids fighting it.

I too am for bringing back the draft. See how fast shit changes when we are forcing people to die "for their country".

Throw in a few constipated looking generals dressed in combat duds telling us how dangerous the bogeyman is, add a few "experts" to the newshour and, voila! we have another lost war to fight.

Works every time.

without congressional approval, and it certainly won't matter whether Americans want to finance another Middle East war. The Obama War Doctrine only requires international approval, besides our "fresh" volunteer forces are always ready to fight.
