(E action) PROTECT THE HEALTH OF WORKERS OF HYUNDAI'S SUPPLIER IN SELMA, ALABAMA

TO: LEAR/RENOSOL AND HYUNDAI

Conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the May 1st chemical leak at the Selma plant in Alabama, and then report the findings to all workers who had been exposed to the leak. Lear must also provide breathing tests for all workers to examine if there are immediate medical issues that need to be addressed, and fund all costs associated with those tests.
Why is this important?

Selma, Alabama, is famous for its role in the civil rights movement. But there are workers in Selma right now who are still fighting for our rights.

I work at a plant in Selma operated by Renosol car parts manufacturer, making seats for the Lear Corporation - a Fortune 500 Company. Early on the morning of May 1, workers at my plant in Selma, Alabama, were evacuated because of a chemical leak. When I arrived at work, I could still smell the chemicals in the air. Management admitted there had been a leak. They put a “diaper” on the leak—some old rags and plastic—but said a more permanent repair would have to wait until Sunday.

Even though workers said they were getting sick from the fumes, we still had to work all day Thursday and Friday. Some people even had to work a 12-hour shift on Saturday. Just a few hours after we arrived at work on Monday morning, the alarms went off and the plant was evacuated yet again. Unbelievably, the plant was evacuated again as I was preparing this petition.
