Chilis and Sonic became the latest national chains to wade into the gun debate on Friday, announcing in apparently coordinated statements that firearms are no longer welcome in their restaurants.
In separate statements, the companies said that they were asking customers not to openly carry firearms in their eateries, following a similar move by Chipotle earlier this month.

It doesn't make you "special" in the least. Most people here do not feel it's a big deal and not not opposed to it.

(19,926 posts)There was no reason for that person to even bring that up. It's like gun owners just can't help rubbing it in people's faces. So annoying and not helping their cause.

(17,493 posts)as they don't realize that you are carrying.
I don't open carry because it is illegal in my state. There is an open carry movement in the state which I don't support. If however, they are successful I would rarely open carry except in those places where I would not irritate or cause fear in those around me.
The person brought up the point that the restaurants do appear to be banning open carry not concealed carry
I don't think that's inappropriate but is part of the discussion on the issue. Nor do I believe his intention was to rub the fact that he carries concealed in people's faces.
I've legally carried concealed for well over 15 years. I don't believe that a single person in the stores or restaurants I have visited was aware of that fact including the staff and the management. The last thing I would ever hope to do is to anger, scare or intimate those around me who pose no danger to me.
I can't for the life of me understand what these groups of individuals who open carry in restaurants are hoping to accomplish. They are merely looking like a bunch of fools, which in my opinion they are.

(32,723 posts)Towns back then took pride that you didn't HAVE to carry a gun and many had bans on guns.
The Gunfight at the OK Corral started because the lawmen were trying to collect the guns of some cowboys who were violating the town ordinance. They got a few from some cold dead hands.

(23,156 posts)At least with open carry I know exactly which asshole has a gun. With concealed carry, absolutely any asshole out there might have one.
And spare me any justification whatsoever about why you need to carry a gun in the first place. It's all these goddamn guns that result in all these shootings.
I keep on pointing out that countries with unarmed citizens don't have all these shootings. And all the gun apologists somehow have some excuse as to why we need all these guns. Australia took away guns after a mass shooting. We could do so too.

(32,733 posts)carry can't turn that uneasy feeling off just because it's a cop wearing the gun. That's why I feel extremely uncomfortable around cops--not only do they carry their guns openly, but they somehow have been granted the authority to kill whoever, whenever.

(7,720 posts)The number of 'bad cops' are wmaller than the number of anyone else with guns. You should rethink your opinionszabout cops. What, do you think the cop sitti g at the next table is going to pull hid weapon qnd shoot you and your family?

(32,733 posts)police harassment, but that's not the case for me. It's not about conspiracies or paranoia. Police harassment, brutality, and corruption is well documented. In addition to police brutality and assaults, at least 500 *innocent* Americans are killed by police every year (many in no-knock home raids, etc.). Most of the officers involved in such attacks keep their jobs and are not penalized as long as they come up with a good excuse. You should look into it sometime if you're interested (which based on your comments, I doubt you are).

(18,318 posts)In Texas, the only way to legally bar guns (concealed or open) is to post a "30.06" notification, and not many do.
Strange, how various prohibitions (guns, smoking, gay behavior) fret or used to fret a lot about "public display." I would be happy if the laws on open-carry were opened up enough to allow arms in public for purposes of transfer to cars, gun shops, accessory shops, indoor ranges, etc. Now, there is an atmosphere of revanchement involved with the issue.

Of course the businesses could come out and say no guns allowed period, but if it's concealed properly they would never know anyway.
