One might think this was a 'domesticated' bear ... No, it's only very curious, and very very tired, it seems."He got in the hammock like he was a tourist or something," homeowner Vincent James told CNN affiliate WESH. Usually, James is the one lounging on his back in the white rope mesh hanging between two trees.
The bear enjoyed the respite enough to savor it.
He -- or she -- stayed in the hammock for about 20 minutes, said photographer Rafael Torres, who snapped pictures of the bear from 60 feet away. Torres' presence did not seem to disturb the wild animal's repose.

(23,156 posts)as a domesticated bear. Cats, dogs, horses, cows, and so on are domesticated, meaning they are used to living with humans and most of the time won't harm us. But if abandoned by humans they can become feral.
Some otherwise wild animals can become tamed by contact with humans. Those people who commonly bring lions, tigers, alligaters, and so on into their homes generally tame those animals, but they are still wild and will often revert to their natural state which usually results in the death or maiming of a human. Revisit that woman who was mauled by the friend's chimp a few years ago to be reminded of how dangerous non domesticated animals are.
The picture of the bear in the hammock is, of course, quite charming. Luckily no human tried to get too close.

(28,127 posts)As WRI's principal biologist, Lynn Rogers, Ph.D., has spent over 42 years learning about wildlife and sharing his information with the public. Using airplanes, vehicles, and snowshoes, he has radio-tracked over 100 bears in the vast forests of northeastern Minnesota, studying some for as long as 22 years.
Regarded by many as the Jane Goodall of black bears, Rogers has a Ph.D. in Ecology and Behavioral Biology from the University of Minnesota. Rewards include the Quality Research Award from the U. S. Forest Service and the Anna M. Jackson Award from the American Society of Mammalogists.

They are not the man-eating, human stalking creatures that they're often portrayed to be. That sort of attitude is the justification that hunters use to kill them! I've hiked hundred of miles of back-country in my younger days and knew the smell of bears who usually did all they could to avoid us. Rarely did they come into a campsite looking for food.

(23,156 posts)thought they were totally harmless, and his mauling death was video'd?
Not every bear is a crazed human killer, that's clear. But they are still wild animals and much larger and stronger than we are.

(28,127 posts)Bears need to be respected. People need to keep a safe distance away and not feed them or leave food out.
I understand your warning: wild bears should never be considered cuddly pets.
Little known fact, bears can out run horses.
