(23,973 posts)Based on the then current economic numbers the prediction was made that their economy would stagnate even further, leading to civil unrest and political instability.
It was predicted that the USSR would have trouble holding onto the Asian republics dominated by Muslims, and that the Eastern Bloc satellite countries would agitate for trade with the West as their markets went south right along with the declining fortunes of the USSR.
The rate of military spending was untenable and was doomed to crash.
They would have collapsed no matter who was president.

(23,973 posts)I wish I could remember the document number, I remember thinking, "Boy, those guys got it almost exactly correct."
The odd thing was that the OPEC oil embargo put the collapse prediction years further down the road as the sudden doubling of the price of crude was a windfall for the USSR, and the increased crude export income propped up their economy for an extra decade before the inevitable economic decline continued.

(5,954 posts)was out of office; and 'the wimp' who broke his promise about 'no new taxes' was President.
However, most conservatives have a bat-shit crazy conception of the timeline involved in cause and effect.
For example:
1. Jimmy Carter passed the CRA in 1976, causing a housing bubble that began in 2005.
2. The Kemp-Roth (Raygun) tax cuts of 1981 caused the stock market boom in the late 1990s, not to mention the balanced budgets of 1999/2000.
3. It was Raygun's bold move to jack up defense spending in 1985 which caused the USSR to collapse in 1992.
4. The 9-11 terrorist attacks that happened a hear into Bush Jr's Administration were actually caused by Clinton's failure to respond to the USS Cole bombing (although Clinton's attempt to kill bin Laden with cruise missile attacks on Afghanistan and Sudan were just a distraction from Monika Lawinsky; and Reagan's cutting and running from the Lebanon barracks bombing in 1983 had nothing to do with emboldening terrorists). And
5. It was actually BUSH who killed bin Laden, not Obama. Because...well, Bush set the stage for it. Er...yeah, Bush set the stage for killing bin Laden before leaving office, but the implosion of the world economy in 2008, while he was actually IN office was entirely CLINTON'S fault.

(5,954 posts)when each of those is big enough to be its own scandal.
Actually: 1. Trading arms for hostages with Hezbolah, 2. Selling missiles to Iran, and 3. Funding the Contras....that's THREE scandals! Does this mean Obama can start reducing the 'net' number of alleged scandals in his Administration simply by LINKING them?
Maybe we should spread the word that the guys who attacked the embassy in Benghazi did it with guns they got via "Fast & Frivalous," which were fenced to Al Qaida via the New Black Panthers, lead by Eric Holder, and the reason they couldn't respond to the attack that night was because the VA computers had clogged the network with applications from wounded veterans. So, yeah, the Obama administration has only had the "Fast & Furious, Benghazi, Panthers, Shinseki" scandal.
