At first I thought this must be some kind of satire, but apparently not.
However, the result has been deadly, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences which spanned more than six decades of Atlantic hurricanes.
Researchers at the University of Illinois analyzed data on fatalities from every hurricane that made landfall in the United States from 1950-2012.
"A hurricane with a relatively masculine name is estimated to cause 15.15 deaths, whereas a hurricane with a relatively feminine name is estimated to cause 41.84 deaths," said the study.
"In other words, our model suggests that changing a severe hurricane's name from Charley to Eloise could nearly triple its death toll."
Scientists even disregarded two major storms in their analysis -- Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Audrey (1957) -- because they took an outsized number of lives and could have skewed the results.
"In judging the intensity of a storm, people appear to be applying their beliefs about how men and women behave," said co-author Sharon Shavitt, a professor of marketing.

(284 posts)I'll have to do some digging to find the strength of the named hurricanes.
People down here get complacent. When Isaac came rolling by in 2012 I took our daughter and headed west. A lot of people stayed to ride it out. It didn't turn into much of anything but it's that repeated behavior of nothing happening once then nothing happening again that turns the potent storms into huge tragedies.
I think the gender of the name really isn't a factor.

(23,156 posts)until like 1979, wouldn't that very much skew things? How about only looking at hurricanes since we added men's names.

(68,868 posts)From 1950-1979 Hurricanes only had women's names.
Why does this matter?
Because warning systems have gotten a lot better, preparedness, etc.
So, a hurricane from 1954 would have been met with less preparedness and notice than one in 2014.

(23,156 posts)that is in my newspaper today. My article is from the Associated Press and is bylined Seth Borenstein. It points out that the study did not involve any experts in meteorology or disaster science, which strikes me as rather important.
My article also says: "In six different experiments, more than 1,000 test subjects told behavioral scientists at the University of Illinois in Champaign that they were slightly more likely to evacuate from an oncoming storm named Christopher than Christina, Victor than Victoria, Alexander than Alexandra, and Danny than Kate. They found female names less frightening." Since the University of Illinois in Champaign is hardly a place where hurricanes are likely to reach, I wonder how many of the test subjects lived where hurricanes are.
I don't happen to live in Hurricane Territory, so I can't totally predict how I would behave if faced with one, but I hope I'd evacuate as appropriate.
