Yeah... that old thing.
We 've got one thing going for us, it seems to me: the 1% is sooooooooo *dumb*. At least PR-wise.
So I guess the next step is....... what? Staples Charter Schools? Sec. Duncan.... are you there?
>>>Shira Goodman, North American Commercial President for Staples couldnt hide her contempt for Postal Workers when she spoke to hundreds of Staples employees in her first ever Town Hall style meeting. Ms Goodman chastised Postal Workers with several disparaging remarks including: It must be nice to have a job for life then addingthose days are over, this country cant afford to do business as usual. In her world Staples workers are nothing more than temporary workers always at risk to have their jobs abolished.
It comes as no surprise that Shira Goodman was on the Jobs and Economy Steering Committee during Mitt Romneys transition to Massachusetts Governor in 1992. Judging by her attitude towards workers there is no doubt she buys into Romneys hateful 47% comment made during his presidential run.
Its also hardly shocking that Shira Goodmans job before joining Staples in 1992 was being a manager for Bain and Company (1986-1992). Staples was one of her clients. Bain was the leader in outsourcing workers jobs for management profit. She must feel quite comfortable in outsourcing postal jobs to her transient workforce.
The negative ramifications are already being felt by postal workers. In the San Francisco area the USPS has announced it is reducing customer service hours in 21 of the 39 Post Offices. Theyre shutting the doors at 5 p.m. and posting signs sending people to private locations including Staples to conduct postal business, said Geoffray Dumaguit, president of the San Francisco Local of the American Postal Workers Union. This will inconvenience and irritate our customers, who often need to visit a Post Office after work.
Shira Goodman must also feel quite comfortable in knowing her husband Senior Rabbi Wesley Gardenswartz seems to have pretty close to a job for life at Temple Emmanuel in Newton, Massachusetts. I certainly am not anything close to a theologian but People in glass houses shouldnt throw stones is a popular twist on a biblical proverb that I am sure Shira Goodman knows of. Considering her situation It seems the height of hypocrisy to be attacking the hard-working employees of the worlds best Postal Service.
I am sure the bible has plenty of verses about the evil of greed practiced by Bain Capital and Staples. Also many on the virtuousness of treating people with respect and dignity as is practiced by labor unions throughout this country.
The AFL-CIO has announced it has endorsed the APWU national boycott of Staples . This boycott includes all Staples retail stores in the US, Staples.com, Staples Advantage as well as branded proprietary products.

Asked them what are you doing here on Sunday and again asked on Memorial day.
The post office is not hiring any more official 'mailmen'. These are new hires, and they work 7 days a week and holidays delivering stuff in the official mail trucks.
A person I know who is a mailman for over 20 years says constant high pressure to take 'early retirement'.
Looks like the 'for profit' private businessmen are or have taken over the American dream for a decent job with time off and real benefits.

All the money he EARNED, plus the retirement he'll collect won't be as much as the bonus you'll likely receive this year.
As a former APWU member, local officer and shop steward, I will wholeheartedly support this boycott of your company. May your tenure there be short-lived.

(212 posts)Corporations like staples had to have help from the re-pubic party.
During the bush era, they Imposed that burden of paying billions into the postal employees pension fund, hence, it appears they are going broke, so the uninformed public thinks it's a good thing too privatize it.
A few years back, here in Missouri our chickenshit R governor (matt blunt) privatized the dept. of motor vehicles & soon after our fees doubled. He took the infrastructure that the public built & sold it too a private concern for pennies on the dollar. So now we are at the mercy of some billionaire??
Whats next? education, police, fire, highways??

(1,008 posts)You know, that archaic idea that there should be a core set of public services and functions to meet the ongoing needs of the population as a whole. Benefits of being part of a nation, a community; the reason we pay taxes.
Those services would go to all - and they be managed equitably for rural, suburban, urban and business customers. And where those employees don't work at the whim of a CEO angling for market shares and stock prices.
I love the idea of a Public Commons. IMHO, key functions such as schools, roads and public safety need to be public common resources. Postal services should not be part of a corporation and it's bottom line; it needs to be answerable (at least in theory) to the public. A common enterprise also needs to be treated fairly by Congress so it can be successful and forward moving. I shouldn't be burdened by pension provisions and creatively shackled when it wants to innovate. Big $$ private enterprises like Staples would NEVER have tolerated the abuses heaped on USPS by the Republican side of Congress. Those corps would have unleashed a stampede of lobbyists so fast DC would think it had an earthquake.
Where I live we have many alternatives to Staples. I will use them.

JURY RESULTS

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Ah, great. Another person who has fallen for the right wing idiocy that unions are the ones costing the jobs. Dear 951, Here's a joke: a finance guy, a union guy and a non-union guy order an 8 slice pizza and all chip in for it. The finance guy greets the delivery person at the door and eats 7 slices of the pie. He brings the remaining slice into the kitchen and says to the non-union guy, "You better hurry up and eat that slice before this union asshole steals your share." Which character are you in this story? (Hint. You fell for it!!!)
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is a good one to be refuted / challenged in thread, imo. Voting to leave.
