What Democrats need to do now

With the Bergdahl situation, it's abundantly clear the GOP has wondered off into stupidity. They are attacking one of their primary political constituencies in order to attack Obama.

Democrats need to propose new legislation to increase Social Security payments. Right now. The Republicans will spend hours and hours on Fox News talking about how terrible the elderly are. And how they don't deserve any money. And how Social Security must be immediately repealed.

That may have a slight effect on the Republicans in the 2014 election....

Right now the average Senior gets 1400 dollars and Republicans think that is too much. I wonder how much Democrats could realistically raise the amount too. I think 3000 dollars....did I say realistic? Well I really believe that is what the minimum should be if we really want to take care of our seniors. I know this is controversial, but what about ending Social Security for anyone making over 100,000 a year (as Seniors - would include pensions and IRA, 401K withdrawals in monthly installments not including money for medical). Republicans call it an entitlement program which is AKA welfare to them anyway so why not.

No, give it to everyone.

Yes, there are some people receiving Social Security who have very large incomes. Probably less than 1000. It's simply not worth the cost, both political and financial, to cut them off. You mentioned the political costs - it becomes a welfare program, and that hurts it's popularity.

But there's also a large cost to put in the limit you propose. We have to have people checking income, investigating possible fraud, and then try and convict anyone they find doing that. Meanwhile, the couple that was making 100k from their retirement savings has some disaster happen and they suddenly have no income. Under your proposal, they'd have to wait until they could prove loss of income. And then we'd have to have someone investigate to see if they really did lose that income. And so on.

The benefit is small. The costs are very large.
