HypeWatch: Does Wi-Fi Really Disturb Fetal Brains?

Published: Jun 4, 2014
By Sarah Wickline, Staff Writer, MedPage Today

Even without much evidence to support concerns that prenatal exposure to wireless radiation leads to attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, the BabySafe Project is still promoting a "better safe than sorry" campaign to pregnant women.

A joint crusade between two nonprofit activist organizations, the Environmental Health Trust -- led by Devra Davis, PhD, MPH -- and Grassroots Environmental Education, BabySafe offers 10 tips to help reduce fetal exposure to the supposedly harmful waves.

Perhaps setting an iPad streaming television atop the baby bump does carry some level of some type of fetal health risk. Who knows? If so, what could possibly be wrong with a simple recommendation to tell pregnant moms to put a little distance between the device and the belly?

But a scare campaign targeting pregnant women, who already face a barrage of no-nos the second they learn they're with child, also has its risks.

Without definitive science to back it up, words and phrases like "damage," "behavioral disorders," "may lead to long-term health consequences," are pretty hefty terms to be throwing around.

"We insist on proof of human harm and damage before taking steps to prevent that harm," Davis said at a Wednesday morning press conference in New York City, as she put up slides to compare the use of cell phones and other wireless devices to the dangers of tobacco and asbestos on previous generations. "Basically, that means sacrificing one generation eventually to protect another."

Although she made no mention of it at the BabySafe press conference, Davis spent years promoting the idea that cell phones, and several other household items, are carcinogenic.

Based on research from two Turkish universities (Gazi University and Ondokuz Mayis University), Davis now believes irregular, erratic signals from wireless radiation interfere with the rapid neurological growth unique to prenatal cellular development.

Hugh Taylor, MD, chair of the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale-New Haven Hospital, presented his evidence of the effects of cell phone radiation on 33 pregnant mice, published in Scientific Reports in 2012.

Taylor's study showed that prenatal exposure to cell phones -- kept on continuous active calls for the entire gestational period, up to 17 days -- had a dose-response relationship with decreased memory and increased hyperactivity in exposed mice compared with unexposed controls (n=42).

Taylor suggested that the animal study eliminated possible confounders, such as mothers simply ignoring their children as they talk on their cell phone, as causation for behavioral problems rather than the wireless radiation.

Taylor was clear that mice don't get ADHD specifically, but despite that stipulation, he also said that cause and effect was clearly demonstrated in his study -- although he added, "We don't know yet if the findings we see in the mice will be true in humans."

The theory is that this disruption in neurological development leads to ADHD. In one study, researchers from the University of California Los Angeles asked mothers from the Danish National Birth Cohort about their cell phone use during pregnancy and child behavior years later. They found that moms who said they used their cell phones a lot when they were pregnant were more likely to have kids with ADHD than moms who didn't.

But none of the references the BabySafe project gives are quite solid enough for a definitive clinical recommendation. Of the 20 scientific references presented by BabySafe, the majority were animal trials, and only one, the Danish study, involved humans.

The reason there are so many nonhuman studies is because there are ethical issues in performing this type of research on humans; scientists can't just strap cell phones to pregnant bellies and see what happens.

And eliminating confounders, calculating for adjustments and dose-responses, and creating a true control group are outside the scope of research for such a widespread, intangible entity.

So the folks promoting BabySafe are stuck with animal studies and studies based on self-report afflicted with recall-bias and incalculable confounders.

Taylor said he recommends limiting wireless exposure to his pregnant patients. Davis said she is pushing to pass regulation requiring wireless device companies to fork over a $1 tax per device for research on potential harms, and to slap black labels on devices warning moms of potential harms.

Taylor said that none of his patients showed signs of anxiety or deep concern over his cautioning. But not every doctor will caution as calmly as Taylor. Fox News 5 in New York ran a video interview with a pretty nervous pregnant woman who had been warned by a friend about exposure.

Several other countries, including Turkey, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Israel have some sort of limitation on children's exposure to wireless devices or advertising for those devices.

There is no doubt further research is warranted based on preliminary rodent studies that suggest potential harms. But likening cell phone use to asbestos and tobacco might be taking it a bit far for now.

Joint Statement on Pregnancy and Wireless Radiation

We join together as physicians, scientists and educators to express our concern about the risk that wireless radiation poses to pregnancy and to urge pregnant women to limit their exposures.

We recognize that the exquisitely delicate systems that direct the development of human life are vulnerable to environmental insults, and that even minute exposures during critical windows of development may have serious and life-long consequences.

We know that the scientific process demands a thorough and exhaustive examination of the possible impact of wireless radiation on health; however, we believe substantial evidence of risk, rather than absolute proof of harm, must be the trigger for action to protect public health.

We call on the research community to conduct more studies to identify the mechanisms by which a fetus could be affected by wireless radiation exposures. We call on our elected leaders to support such research and to advance policies and regulations that limit exposures for pregnant women. We call on industry to implement and explore technologies and designs that will reduce radiation exposures until such research is carried out.

We affirm our role as health and science professionals to inform the public about the potential dangers associated with early-life exposures to wireless radiation, and invite all professionals engaged in obstetric, pediatric, and environmental health advocacy to join us in our quest to ensure the safety and health of future generations.

As I said here, like most, I know little about the subject and am taking my cues from Dr. Devra Davis' advocacy.

And now since the posts are all gathered, I can link only one post from this thread to my journal without losing any of the content. The information matters, it was scattered and now it's not. EXIT stage, lol.

FYI, THIS IS SCIENCE AND IT'S PEER REVIEWED. Please watch the press conference and respect the Precautionary Principle. That's it.

Risks to Baby’s Brain Development from Wireless Radiation

A national public-awareness campaign, called the BabySafe Project is being coordinated to urge pregnant women to limit their exposure to wireless radiation from cell phones and other devices by taking simple steps to protect themselves and their unborn children. The effort is based on research that links exposure to wireless radiation from cell phones during pregnancy to neurological and behavioral problems in children. Although more research is needed to determine how the developing brain is affected, evidence suggests potential harm.

Researchers recommend taking simple precautions, such as avoiding carrying your cell phone on your body or avoiding prolonged or direct exposure to nearby Wi-Fi routers. To read more about this study, click here.

INTERNATIONAL PRECAUTIONARY ACTIONS
by Governments, Authorities and Schools.

Governments and health authorities around the world are taking action
to minimize citizen’s exposure to wireless radiation.

France: New Legislation and the National Agency for Health, Food and Environmental Safety (ANSES).
● 2013 The French National Assembly passed an amendment banning WiFi from nursery Schools and strongly discouraging WiFi in their schools until its proven “safe for human consumption.”
● 2011 French Cell Phone Statute: Merchants must display SAR Radiation levels for different phone models, all phones must be sold with a headset, cell phone ads aimed at children younger than 14 are banned and phones made for children under 6 are banned.
● 2013 ANSES Report recommends hands free phones, SAR labeling, and “limiting the population's exposure to radiofrequencies... especially for children and intensive users, and controlling the overall exposure that results from relay antennas.”
● The French National Library along with other libraries in Paris, and a number of universities removed WiFi networks in 2008.
● HerouvilleSaintClair has removed all WiFi equipment installed in municipal facilities. Priority was given to schools. WiFi is replaced in almost all schools by fiber optic cable.

Belgium: Federal Public Health Regulations on March 2013 due to Health Concerns for Children.
● Phones designed for children under 7 years old are prohibited from sale.
● Total Advertising Ban on cell phones aimed at children younger than 14.
● Mandatory Radiation SAR levels must be available for consumers at point of sale.
● Warning label on phones: “Think about your health – use your mobile phone moderately, make your calls wearing an earpiece and choose a set with a lower SAR value.”
● Recommendations include use of handsfree methods to keep the phone away from the body such as text messaging and not making calls when the signal is weak, such as in an elevator or in a moving vehicle.
Australia: In 2013 the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency issued Fact Sheet 14: titled How to Reduce exposure from mobile phones and other wireless devices.
● Reduce the risk from WiFi devices by “keeping them at a distance, for example placing the wireless router away from where people spend time”, and “reducing the amount of time you use them”.
● “ARPANSA recommends that parents encourage their children to limit their exposure.”

Finland: The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority issued recommendations for children which include: favoring text messages, parents limiting duration and amount of calls, the use of hands free devices, avoiding calls in a low reception area and keeping the phone away from the body.
● "With children, we have reason to be especially careful, because there is not enough research on children's mobile phone use. Unfortunately, it will not be easy to obtain this information in the future, either, because of ethical considerations, the use of children as research subjects must always be heavily justified", according to STUK research director Sisko Salomaa.

Israel: The Israeli Ministry Of Education has issued guidelines limiting WiFi and cell phone use in schools.
● Preschool through 2nd grade have banned the use of wireless networks.
● A hard wired direct cable connection is required if the teacher has a computer in the class.
● The Israeli Supreme Court Has ordered the Israeli government to reply why Wifi installations should
not cease by July 2014.
● In third and fourth grade class internet is restricted to 3 hours per week.
● The Education Ministry has instructed all schools to perform radiation tests.
● Israel's Minister of Health Rabi Litzman stated that he supports a ban on WiFi in schools.

Switzerland: The Governing Council of Thurgau Canton 2008 “The Governing Council recommends for schools to forgo the use of wireless networks when the structural makeup of a given school building allows for a wired network.“

Germany: The German Federal Ministry for Radiation Protection states,”supplementary precautionary measures such as wired cable alternatives are to be preferred to the WLAN system.”
● Bavaria: The State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs: “For precautionary reasons the Federal Office for Radiation Protection recommends for schools that if a wireless network is used to place its components in suitable locations and to prefer the use of wired network solutions whenever possible.” In 2007 Parliament recommendation to all schools to not install wireless LAN networks.
● Frankfurt: “In Frankfurt’s schools there will be no wireless networks in the short or mid term. The Local Education Authority did not wish to conduct a “large scale human experiment,” said Michael Damian, spokesperson of the Head of the School Department Jutta Ebeling.

Austria: "The official advice of the Public Health Department of the Salzburg Region is not to use WLAN and DECT in Schools or Kindergartens.” Gerd Oberfeld, MD.
● The Austrian Medical Society has issues cell phone safety guidelines stating that cell phones should be used for as short of a time as possible and that children under 16 should not use cell phones at all. The state that wireless LAN leads to high microwave exposure.
United Kingdom: The UK National Health Service has specific Recommendations for children and cell phones as “children are thought to be at higher risk of health implications”.
● “Children should only use mobile phones for essential purposes and keep all calls short. “
● For the public they have “recommendations to help lower any potential longterm risks” which
include keeping calls short, keep phone away from the body on standby mode, only use it when the reception is strong and use a phone with an external antenna.

India: 2012 The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology issued EMF guidelines with new Exposure Limits lowered to 1/10 of the ICNIRP level, SAR labeling on phones.
● Official guidelines for cell phone use include: Headsets, Speakerphones, limiting cell use, increasing distance from devices, and choosing landlines.
● 2013: Supreme Court of India upholds a decision of the High Court of the State of Rajasthan to remove all cell towers from the vicinity of schools, colleges, hospitals and playgrounds because of radiation “hazardous to life.”
● The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has a webpage entitled “ A Journey for EMF” detailing guidelines and current issues with wireless devices and cell towers.

Italy: The Italian Supreme Court ruled a man’s brain tumor was caused by his cell phone use in 2012. The National Institute for Workmen’s Compensation must compensate a worker with head tumor due to cell use.

Russia: The Russian National Committee on NonIonizing Radiation Protection has repeatedly warned about electromagnetic radiation impacts on children and recommended WiFi not be used in schools.
● “Thus, for the first time in the human history, children using mobile telecommunications along with the adult population are included into the health risk group due to the RF EMF exposure.”
● “In children, the amount of socalled stem cells is larger than in adults and the stem cells were shown to be the most sensitive to RF EMF exposure.”
● “It is reasonable to set limits on mobile telecommunications use by children and adolescents, including ban on all types of advertisement of mobile telecommunications for children.”
● Decision of Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection 2008, "CHILDREN AND MOBILE PHONES: THE HEALTH OF THE FOLLOWING GENERATIONS IS IN DANGER.”

Canada: Health Canada offers “Practical Advice” on reducing exposure to wireless radiation.
● Recommendations: 1. Limit the length of cell phone calls, 2. Replace cell phone calls with text, use
"handsfree" devices and 3. Encourage children under the age of 18 to limit their cell phone usage
● “Health Canada reminds cell phone users that they can take practical measures to reduce RF
exposure. The department encourages parents to reduce their children's RF exposure from cell phones since children are typically more sensitive to a variety of environmental agents...There is a lack of scientific information regarding the potential health impacts of cell phones on children.”

European Environment Agency: “All reasonable measures to be taken to reduce exposures to electromagnetic fields, especially radiofrequencies from mobile phones and particularly the exposures to children and young adults. Current exposure limits to be reconsidered.”

The European Environment Agency Report: “Late Lessons from Early Warnings, Volume II” 2013 Report details the accumulating science on radio frequency radiation, the significant risks of waiting and critical need to take precautionary action to reduce exposures to avoid widespread harm.

Resolution 1815: In 2011 The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe issued The Potential Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields and Their Effect on the Environment.

A call to European governments to “take all reasonable measures” to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields “particularly the exposure to children and young people who seem to be most at risk from head tumours.”
The Resolution calls for member states to:
● Implement “information campaigns about the risk of biological effects on the environment and
human health, especially targeting children and young people of reproductive age. “
● “Reconsider the scientific basis for the present standards on exposure to electromagnetic
fields set by the International Commission on NonIonising Radiation Protection, which have serious limitations, and apply ALARA principles, covering both thermal effects and the athermic or biological effects of electromagnetic emissions or radiation.”
“For children in general, and particularly in schools and classrooms, give preference to wired Internet connections, and strictly regulate the use of mobile phones by schoolchildren on school premises.”

United States: Legislation has been introduced at the state and national level. Some Communities have issued proclamations, resolutions and and started initiatives to inform the public of wireless health issues.
● 2012 The Cell Phone Right to Know Act H.R. 6358 was introduced receiving strong support from many organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics. (AAP Letter here.) This legislation called for labels on mobile devices at point of sale, a comprehensive national research program to study whether exposure to wireless devices causes adverse biological effects directed by NIEHS and the EPA and exposure level regulation.
● 2014 The Maine LD 1013 "The Wireless Information Act" passed the State Senate and House but then failed to pass the second vote. The Bill requires manufacturer's information on radiofrequency exposure be visible on the outside of the cell phone's product packaging.
● 2014 Hawaii Senate Bill SB 2571 was introduced calling for a warning label encouraging consumers to follow the enclosed product safety guidelines to reduce exposure to radiation that may be hazardous to their health.
● The San Francisco Cell Phone Right to Know Ordinance was signed in 2011 requiring cell phone retailers to distribute an educational sheet created by the San Francisco Department of Environment that explains radiofrequency emissions from cell phones and how consumers can minimize their exposure. The CTIA sued the city and settled with the City to block implementation of the Ordinance in exchange for a waiver of attorneys' fees. The City still maintains a Cell Phone Information page with significant information on how to reduce exposure.
● 2012, Jackson Hole, Wyoming made a Proclamation of Cell Phone Safety which cites concern over long term health effects as well as the increased risk the radiation poses to children.

France: New National Law Bans WIFI in Nursery School
by Annie Sasco, MD D.Sc

Dr. Annie Sasco, served the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, for 22 years, including posts as Chief of Epidemiology for Cancer Prevention and Acting Chief of the Cancer Control Programme of the World Health Organization (WHO). She earned her MA, MS, and DSc from Harvard University and is currently Professor of Epidemiology University of Bordeaux.

Professor Annie Sasco, MD, DSc former Cancer Prevention Chief of the International Agency for Research on Cancer and a distinguished science adviser to Environmental Health Trust sends us her report about France’s new national law regulating electromagnetic field exposure:

On January 29, 2015, the French National Assembly made history by passing a new national law to reduce exposures to wireless radiation electromagnetic fields.

* WiFi Banned in Nursery Schools: WIFI and Wireless devices will be banned in “the spaces dedicated to home, to rest and activities of children under 3 years”.
* WiFi Minimized in Schools: In schools for children up to 11 years, WIFI routers should be turned off when not in use for pedagogic purposes.
* Schools Will be Informed: The board of the school should be informed when new tech equipment is being installed in schools.
* Cell Tower Emission Compliance Will Be Verified: A decree will define the limits of emission of equipments for electronic communications or transmission to which the public is exposed. These values can be verified by accredited organisations and results will be made accessible to the public through a National Radiofrequency Agency.
* Citizens Will Have Access to Environmental/Cell Tower Radiation Measurements Near homes: Every resident may get access to the results of measurements for their living space. Conditions of information of the public as well as involvement of the local authorities are specified as are the steps to follow in case of disagreement.
* Cell Antennae Maps For the Country: A description and map of the places with atypical (higher than the limits) places will be conducted at regular intervals with follow up of the actions being taken to limit the exposure. A map of all antennas will be produced for each town
* Continued Evaluation of Health Effects: The National Radiofrequence Agency will be in charge of surveillance and vigilance, evaluating potential risks and setting up scientific research, including information on health effects.
* SAR Radiation Labeling Mandated: The SAR of cell phones must be clearly indicated on the package.
* Information on Reducing Exposures Mandatory: Information on ways to reduce exposure will be detailed in the contents of the cell phone package. .
* WIFI Hotspots will be Labeled: Places where WIFI is provided should be clearly marked with a pictogram.
* Advertisements Must Recommend Devices That Reduce Radiation Exposure to the Brain: Advertising for cell phones should clearly indicate the recommendation of hand free kits for protection of the head of the user and it will be included in the package. * Advertising for cell phone not accompanied by such a kit is forbidden. Companies in violation will be fined 75,000 Euros.
* Children Must Be Provided Protections: At the request of the buyer, equipment reducing cell phone radiation exposures to the head for children less than 14 years should be provided.
* The Public Will Be Informed: Within a year, a policy of information on awareness and information on a responsible and reasonable use of cell phones and other apparatus emitting radiofrequencies will be set up.
* Electrohyper-sensitivity Report To Be Submitted: Within a year, a report on electrohyper sensitivity must be given to the Parliament.

This new law represents a significant step forward. Further laws and decrees may reinforce the current law, in particular with a stronger protection in schools.

Background:

In February the French government banned Wi-Fi in nursery schools and restricted use in primary schools. The German government has recommended that the use of Wi-Fi in the workplace or home should be avoided where possible. LA has reduced student exposure to Wi-Fi radiation to 10,000 times below US government standard.

In 2000, a report commissioned by the Government concluded that no school should fall within 100 metres of a mobile phone mast; in 2007 a BBC Panorama programme found that the readings next to a classroom laptop showed radiation at double the level only 100 metres from a mobile phone mast.

A five-year-old absorbs up to 60 per cent more radiation than an adult due largely to their thinner skulls and the high water content of a young body. In Western countries brain tumours have overtaken leukaemia as the most common cause of cancer in children.
A 2008 study found a fivefold increase in the risk of glioma (a form of brain cancer now recognised by the World Health Organisation as being linked to mobile phone usage) for those starting mobile phone use under 20 years of age, indicating that the age group at first use is highly significant.

Public Health Impacts of Wireless Radiation -- Flying Blind
Posted: 07/07/2014 10:12 am EDT Updated: 5 hours ago

By Devra Davis, Ph.D.
President and Founder, Environmental Health Trust, lecturer, San Francisco, London

As uses and users of wireless transmitting devices are skyrocketing in our homes, schools and even our national parks, one would think that scientific research on the human health and environmental implications of wireless electromagnetic radiation would be exploding with fierce competition. Yet as I write this blog fresh from the Capetown South Africa meeting of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, research funding and training in this field is at its lowest point in modern history in both the government and private sector. Motorola's once vaunted laboratory is no more.

The society awarded its highest accolade to Environmental Protection Agency Senior Scientist Carl Blackman at the meeting. EPA's most distinguished and prolific investigator in the field, Blackman retired just two days after receiving the D'Arsonval Medal. Blackman explained that funds for research in this field at EPA had been wiped out.

This is a tragedy for the field and bespeaks an unfortunate policy direction. Despite the extraordinary growth in wireless transmitting devices, we lack the resources to study their impacts in any systematic way. The absence of research on the health or environmental impacts of wireless radiation should not be confused with proof of safety.

Other presentations highlighted the exciting new field of electro-ceuticals -- where electric current is being applied to treat a range of diseases including cancer. Thus, the biological impact of electromagnetic fields is not in dispute. The meeting also heard presentations showing that cows, bats and carp orient their bodies along lines that reflect the earth's magnetic field. When asked what this might mean for mammalian migration and even for human health, Uwe Bregger, the animal ecologist who presented this work, quipped, "I would certainly never live near a wireless tower."

The issue of exposures to towers is one of many on which we simply have no serious research underway, despite growing public concerns.

The last national survey on exposures to electromagnetic fields in America took place in 1980. Standards for cell phones were set 18 years ago. Would you fly in an airplane that met old safety standards? While the Israelis have established a national institute to evaluate wireless transmitting devices, no serious research is underway in the U.S., excepting one large animal study that was first proposed 14 years ago. In fact, this past week researchers in China published a study on pregnant women planning to have an abortion. Those results are mindboggling: Women with the highest exposures to electromagnetic fields had much smaller embryos.

Conspicuously missing from the Bioelectromagnetics meeting are young students from America. Frank Barnes, member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and mentor to a generation of students, has no funding to continue his groundbreaking work at the University of Colorado showing the impacts of magnetic fields on experimental variability. In 2008, he chaired the committee that presented a National Research Council Report, "The Identification of Research Needs Relating to Potential Biological or Adverse Health Effects of Wireless Communications Devices," as requested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, identifying research gaps and the critical need to increase our understanding of any potential adverse effects of long term chronic exposure to RF energy on children and pregnant woman. That report identified several important data gaps -- none of which has been addressed in the meantime.

Children Face the Highest Health Risk From Cell Phones

Roxanne Nelson
August 13, 2014

The potential harm from microwave radiation (MWR) emitted by wireless devices, particularly for children and unborn babies, is the highlight of a new review.

Although the data are conflicting, associations between MWR and cancer have been observed.

The review, by L. Lloyd Morgan, senior science fellow at Environmental Health Trust, and colleagues, was published online July 15 in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure.

The authors reviewed the current literature showing that children face a higher health risk than adults. They evaluated peer-reviewed cell phone exposure epidemiology from 2009 to 2014, along with cell phone dosimetry data, government documents, manufacturers' manuals, and similar publications.

The rate of absorption is higher in children than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner, and their relative size is smaller. The fetus is particularly vulnerable because MWR exposure can result in degeneration of the protective myelin sheath that surrounds brain neurons, they report.

Raising "Appropriate Concerns"

The review authors "continue to raise appropriate concerns related to the ever-increasing role of technologies that emit nonionizing radiation, including cell phones and certain toys," said L. Dade Lunsford, MD, Lars Leksell Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, who was not involved in the study.

"They indicate that certain types of tumors, at least as reported, may have increased in incidence, including the most malignant brain tumors and perhaps hearing nerve tumors," he told Medscape Medical News. However, he pointed out that there are issues with some of the data, and that many of the reports are anecdotal.

Take-Home Messages About Safe Use

As a take-home message for physicians and other healthcare practitioners, Morgan emphasized that wireless telecommunication devices need to be used in a safe manner. These devices are now part of everyday life, "but they can be used in a manner that is safe enough," he said. "Cars are not safe, for example, but they are safe enough. The essential problem is the vast majority of the public has no knowledge of their hazards."

Morgan and his colleagues have made some recommendations.

The first is that "distance is your friend." The intensity of radiation decreases as the square of the distance from the source increases (the inverse-square law). He explained that holding a cell phone 15 cm from your ear "provides a 10,000-fold reduction in risk."

Unless a cell phone is turned off, it is always radiating. When not in use, it should not be kept on the body. The best place for a cell phone is somewhere like a purse, bag, or backpack.

Devices should be kept away from a pregnant woman's abdomen, and a mother should not use a cell phone while nursing, Morgan noted. "And baby monitors should not be placed in an infant's crib."

Children and adolescents need to know how to use these devices safely. Cell phones should not be allowed in a child's bedroom at night, he continued. "The Pew Research Center has reported that 75% of preteens and early teens sleep all night with their cell phone under their pillow."

Because the risk is cumulative, and more radiation is absorbed with more hours of use, children should be taught to minimize their wireless phone use, Morgan explained. Landlines, Skype, and computer phone services (when connected to the Internet with a cable) do not emit radiation and their use should be encouraged.

Finally, Wi-Fi routers in the home should be placed away from where people, particularly children, spend the most time. "Boys should not keep a cell phone in their front pants pockets," he said. There is a potential harm to sperm, although no prepuberty studies of young boys have assessed whether early exposure to MWR has any effect on sperm after puberty, he acknowledged.

"And girls should not place their cell phone in their bras," he added. This recommendation was based on a case study of 4 young women with a history of putting cell phones in their bras and who developed breast cancer — 2 at the age of 21 years (Case Rep Med. 2013;2013:354682).
