Manziel, Staubach help their cities in bid to land GOP convention

In the high-stakes competition for the Republican presidential convention, rival cities are relying on whatever clout they can muster.

The latest pits Johnny Football against Captain Comeback.

Cleveland’s private reception for GOP convention scouts this week included the city’s newest celebrity: Johnny Manziel. Reporters weren’t allowed in, but sponsors later tweeted their thanks to the Browns’ players and coach who came to talk up the city’s features.

Convention planners, after the Ohio visit, arrived Wednesday in Kansas City. They meet later with the other finalists, Denver and Dallas — each putting on their best show to land the 2016 convention.

Odds are he's a Republican based on demographics alone, but it's also very likely he doesn't care at all about politics one way or another, but his agent tells him he should play ball with the local officials in his new city to develop a marketable reputation as an asset to the community.

FWIW, no fan of Johnny Football here, and this obviously doesn't help in my eyes. If he starts actually imagining he has something of value to say in promotion of RW ideas, that's when I'll feel comfortable tagging him as a GOPer.

Democrats united with Republicans in an effort to win the convention, which would have brought big bucks to the city and its hospitality businesses.
Cincinnati was elinimiated from contention partially because the (privately-owned) arena which would have been the main venue lacked some needed facilities.

The last place to hold that party, which is still trying to get the money the GOP promised.

Do not count on local marchants making bucks as the convention will try to steer people into pre planned venues, which soak up the money. Ask any Tampa bar owner how much money they lost during that time.

Allow an example:

I hate cigars, but Tampa is known for being the place that made them famous. Name any brand, they had their factory here. Indeed, the big, expensive "Churchill" cigars that were made famous by Winston Churchill, were made here. Back when he was a humble journalist in town, covering the Spanish American war, he got hooked on the big Cuban style ones. Also, let's not forget that some of these Tampa Cigars were literally used to hide messages from Jose Marti himself to conduct the Cuban war of independence, which made them beloved by many Cuban GOP types that made them a symbol of their war with Castro and communism.

Why the lecture on Tampa Cigars? because many of the Tampa cigar bars thought they would enjoy patronage of the GOP. Not unreasonable considering how many GOP were cigar lovers, including Rush Limbaugh, who was going to be in town. Well, what happened, they herded GOP convention goers into a "cigar tent."

Yes, here is the town that INVENTED the cigar bar, and the convention staff wanted so much control, they asked convention goers to patronize a literal TENT instead ofthe local shops. A lot of buisnesses lost BIG money, because they had naturally expected convention goers to show up, only to find the venues churchmouse quiet! It may seem funny to see these Republican bar owners get hosed, but many of the Democrat waiters and clerks got smacked down in the process, and lost jobs. For every little thing money could be spent on, someone had already made a venue and corraled the GOP in as much as possible. I have no reason to think that such plans are not ALREADY in the works for whatever city wants to get hosed by hosting that big damned party.

The only other draw near the Convention Center is the Omni Hotel where most of the delegates would likely stay. Downtown Dallas is not a walkable city during the summer and the temperatures will be over 95 degrees in the evening. The only other hotels nearby are an Aloft Hotel and a Hyatt Regency which are about 4 blocks away. Most of the other upscale hotels are 7-8 blocks away so it will be a stretch for the delegates to walk that distance although some shuttle buses will probably be arranged.

The bar scene, dance halls and finer restaurants are farther away and the delegates will have to drive to those locations. The primary beneficiary of the convention will be a few hotels in the area and possibly a few barbecue joints downtown--the rest of the town won't notice anything except for the inconvenience.

My guess is that they will have BBQ at the convention center, so that these folks do not have to drive.
