Jeebus, Joe Scar started screaming at Chuck Todd today!

I've seen his tantrums but this was full out crazy...Chuck Todd told Joe not to criticize Bergdahl's parents and Joe went off like an out of control firecracker...it was an epic rant. Even Saxby Chambliss told him he'd had too much of that Starbucks brew...

Mika made a crack about his baby blue sweater and Joe snapped "Look at you, easter egg!" about her all pink dress and scarf. To which she snapped back "I'm a girl!"

Joe's rant at Chuck (who was on remote from Brussels) was how he, Joe, would have handled it if HIS son had told him he was going to desert his post..."I would tell him to stay where he was and contact his CO about getting him psychological help..." Joe's parental advice is SO helpful...

It was a fun start to the day...

Republican water-carrying about how it did matter that we traded those 5 for 'a deserter' and not, for instance, a 'war hero' or 'a senator' or 'Joe Scarborough'. Which tells you exactly why the Republicans want to paint Bergdahl in the worst possible light - it heterodynes with their need to paint this as a scandal, even a crime.

Scarborough rarely disappoints in his job as the GOP standard bearer, in his morning mini fox and and friends on MSNBC.

I did notice that he was quiet during the clips I've seen, and Kristol is the ultimate "chicken hawk." Of course George W. Bush also "served." Actually, having grown up in the era of Viet Nam, and having a brother and many friends (usually desperate not to flunk out of college) who ended up serving, I know that the realization that this war was not about patriotic service to the country made a big difference that our parental "greatest" generation either "got" or didn't. I have never had the right to feel harshly about those who felt gung-ho about joining up, any more than those who avoided serving (if you enlisted you had an extra year but were supposed to have some choice in training). What I do feel is that those, like Dick Cheney, who took every deferment possible, but became war mongers when in a position of power are beneath contempt.

NBC News is the boss of them; and NBC news is not leftist by any stretch. But NBC thought it could make a dollar by pretending to be the left's answer to FOX, especially when Bush's approval ratings dropped to 30% and Olbermann became MSNBC's highest-rated show.

However, NBC News never let go of its rightist preferences, or of Scarborough. Even held on to Pat Buchanan until it could no longer even pretend to be unaware of his racism and xenophobia.

However, that very same Sunday, Tavis Smiley was on one of the shows and I do think he is a traditional Democrat, of the Christian variety.

Other than Smiley, though, there are not many traditional Democrats on TV, let alone liberals. It's usually a center right Democrat, who is more right than center. And, sometimes, not even the best and the brightest or the best debater of that group, either.

And that is what passes for balanced TV journalism anymore.

Jun 2014

It got its liberal rap when it finally started reporting on the civil rights brutality in the 1950s and 1960s, even though it took a while before they started exposing it.

And then, there was Cronkite, correctly (and probably belatedly) pronouncing the Vietnam War unwinnable and shedding a tear on camera when he was notified, while on air, that a father of two young kids who was a Democrat and had had his brain shot out in Texas had just been pronounced dead.

Those events formed the alleged basis for the right to insist that media are liberal. And, conservatives being as obstinate and dishonest as they are, the liberal rap has never gone away, no matter how much it diverges from reality.

If ever mass media deserved, even a little, to be described as liberal, it sure stopped deserving that label once most mass media in the US got concentrated into the hands of about only four or five large corporations. But the Big Lie about liberal media continues anyway because it is convenient for rightists to continue it.

Why is it convenient? Because, like facts, news has a liberal bias.

So many of them are quite open about their assholery. Proud, even, at least until it bites some of them in the re-election ass.

Scarborough, on the other hand, likes to pretend he is above them, as well as being above, of course, partisan Democrats. But, he isn't. He's only more cynical and more of a hypocrite, desperately needing to be seen as more rational than most of the population and therefore superior to most of the population.

One of the things Joe said this morning was that it should have mattered (in thinking about the exchange) that the Sgt was (according to Joe) ashamed of the US mission in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Joe has been condemning that mission and so-called "nation building" for years. Well, for some of the years Obama has been in office, anyway.

Joe claims he, like other "real" conservatives, disapproved of it when Bush did it, too. Funny, though, I never heard good ole post-partisan Joe say that on air until Bush was well out of range of having it affect him (Bush) at the poles.

Sleazy Joe, thinkin' he's slick and pulling off his act. But, those of us whose memory still functions don't have a lot of trouble seeing him for the uber partisan, uber hypocritical, uber ideologue that he is.
