Someone Left A Loaded Gun In The Toy Aisle Of Target

A Target employee found a loaded handgun in the toy aisle of a South Carolina store last week, just days before activists began petitioning the retailer to ban firearms from its stores.

The gun, loaded with live ammunition, was found sitting atop a superhero Playskool toy box at a Myrtle Beach store last Friday, WMBF News reported Thursday morning.

"We take these matters very seriously and we are partnering with local law enforcement on this incident," Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "Because this matter is under investigation, we are unable to share additional information."

On Wednesday, the gun-control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America kicked off a national campaign calling on Target to prohibit the open carry of guns in its stores.

The petition has dragged Target into a bitter fight between Moms Demand Action and a collection of open carry advocates in Texas, who were photographed toting assault rifles through a Dallas-area Target in March.

Videos and photos of affiliated open carry groups hauling their firearms into Chipotle, Chili's and Sonic prompted the restaurant chains to announce no-gun policies last month. Under intense criticism, C.J. Grisham, president of the group Open Carry Texas, has since backed down, asking members of his group to stop bringing their rifles into businesses.

"Assault rifles and guns don't belong in the baby aisle, they don't belong in the toy aisle -- and they don't belong in any aisle of stores that American moms frequent like Target," Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, said in a statement on Thursday. "It's time for Target, a store that American moms flock to, to follow the lead of Chipotle and Starbucks and prohibit the open carry of firearms.”

For his part, Grisham, in a statement to HuffPost, suggested that "despicable" gun-control activists planted the gun.

"Target is currently in the crosshairs of gun control extremists who will stoop to [no] level too low to effectuate their agenda," he wrote in an email. "Our children are our most precious commodity and intentionally putting them in any kind of danger to exploit a personal agenda is deranged, sick and twisted."

Which is why I will fight and defy and obstruct and loudly denounce assholes like this - to my last breath!!!!

When shit like this happens, I always find myself mumbling - "President Obama doesn't want to come take your precious goddam fucking guns. I do." I'm a MOM. When the kids won't play safely or properly with their toys, the solution is extremely simple: THEN THEY SIMPLY DON'T GET TO HAVE THOSE TOYS ANYMORE!!!! I go and fix it. I take those toys away. Problem solved. Message delivered. Period.

... that someone with a deep conviction that only by removing guns from general public ownership will we all be safer and prevent future Columbines or Sandy Hooks might have planted the gun? You simply cannot discount the possiblity, given the strong feelings and the timing. Who ownes the weapon? That should be a matter of record, or was the serial number filed off? Find out who they are because they either planted the weapon or it was stolen and they as the last owner should be fined for not having it secured from theft.

For the record, tax ammuntion based on a formula of caliber and propellant. Find out where the most instances of gun-related crime is by zip code. Set up military style checkpoints and weapons sweeps in those areas. Confiscate all unlicensed weapons, including those where the paperwork is not provided. Arrest all those without documentation for the weapon in question. Track down the last known owner and fine them for allowing the gun to have been stolen in the first place.

You pay a guard minimum wage, you don't expect him/her to be responsible enough to carry a gun.
No, this is from some gun nut either being careless or trying to make a point.
Left it in the toy aisle where a kid can easily get it & accidentally shoot himself/herself and/or others.

Glad nobody was hurt.
But enough of this behavior & we'll get reasonable gun control in this country.
The gun nuts are making the argument for us.

It might not be impossible but chances are you don't trust a gun to a low paid guard.
Because when you GET low paid guards you run a higher chance of irresponsible people in the position.
Somebody patrolling a Wal-Mart or Target is probably not gonna have a gun.
It's overkill. Puts the customers at unease.

Around a bank? More likely.
But the person at that job will only be a trusted guard who will most likely be paid more than the average guard.
They don't send newbie hires to jobs like that.
A person trusted with a gun at a high profile site either has experience in that field from another job (military experience) or has trained for it & has shown to be a more reliable worker.
Ain't no fresh off the street 21 year olds getting a job like that.
ESPECIALLY if they're paying them McDonald's/Wal-Mart wages.

Are all low paid workers irresponsible by nature? No.
But do you tend to get more irresponsible workers when you pay them low? You bet money you do.
That whole 'You Get What You Pay For' thing.
It's not to say that there aren't irresponsible people with higher pay but if you're paying minimum wage to, say, Secret Service workers, they're more likely to NOT protect the President than protect him/her.

I don't think that gun was left there by a guard.
Some customer did that. A thoughtless gun nut of a customer did that.
I would bet money on it.
If it was a guard, that would be his/her job right then & there.

If you saw a walkie-talkie left behind, that was a guard.
Not so much with the gun left behind.

between $109.99 to $149.99, depending on the store. I still can't see someone spending even $100.00 for a gun just to leave laying around in a store, especially in a children's toys aisle, so a kid might pick it up and shoot someone. That would take one sick fuck and, if that's what really happened, I hope they catch, prosecute and jail the asshole for life.

Black market guns are a tad harder to trace, and I just mean a tad. It is just a myth that they are untraceable.

I would not be shocked if this was accidentally forgotten by a ccw holder or LEO, both have happened. My all time favorite was the air Marshall that forgot gun in bathroom in airport after security.

So I am not going to jump into ill intent until we have positive information here. Either way, bad apple. And as you said, it's now a barrel-full of them.
