(17,199 posts)If anything, MAD should be doing satire on the GOP's shameful flip-flopping, hypocrisy, and hatred.

Anyway, MAD used to be one of my favorite satire magazines, until now.

(7,596 posts)It's fine if they want to mock Obama but at least make it over something legitimate and not some right-wing bullshit. This is something you'd expect to see on Rush Limbaugh's website. Disgusting.

(24,461 posts)Moving with the times apparently means "selling ad space" and "relying on lots of name dropping in place of comedy" and "replacing humor with conservative-tinged mean-spiritedness (Monroe and anything modern Duck Edwing does)" and "substituting satire for gross-out crutches" (Kuper's take on Spy vs Spy).
It's just not the same magazine we all grew up reading in the 60s/70s/early 80s.

(6,829 posts)When I was a kid Cracked was a lock step rip off of Mad, which I remember as far back as 1958 and adored through the 60's.
But now they come up with some magnificent well researched informative content that I find impressive. They do well researched "everything you know is wrong" kinds of material all the time these days and I applaud them,
I wonder how I became such a flaming liberal? In hindsight it may have been reading Mad as a child trained me to cut through all the bullshit out there and become a halfway decent CRITICAL THINKER? They really skewered Sacred Cows back then and Mad is where I learned of the John Birch Society and Ayn Rand.
Grew up with Time, too. Family got it for decades. I let it go maybe in the early 90's? Thank God for the internet and it's a shame the Oligarch's are taking that away from us too with this net neutrality anti democracy push that nobody in their right minds would want, except the Boards and leaders of major corporations.

(1,446 posts)This is NOT the magazine of Jack Davis, Sergio Aragones, Don Martin, George Woodbridge, Harvey Kurtzman, or William M. Gaines!
I stick by this statement, if for no other reason than ' I can't imagine that these erudite men could bend to the will of fascist bastards!'.
My childhood is evaporating before my eyes.

(31 posts)I always saw Mad as a magazine that just made fun of whatever was going on in popular culture without a terribly well defined political philosophy behind it (unless having no philosophy/allegiance is their philosophy).
I don't read it anymore regardless. Haven't bought one of their mags since I was in elementary school.

(498 posts)Obama did his duty! The American Government would have acted dishonorable had they left Bergdahl behind. Being left behind is not a punishment under the UCMJ. I wonder how many American solders the Viet Cong that were exchanged for John McCain killed? A dishonorable SOB who didn't deserve the CMH that he was awarded. He got it because his name was McCain. The CMH should have gone the ones who died in "The Hanoi Hilton." There is something deficient about a McCain that didn't make Admiral, even in retirement.
At least Obama didn't sell weapons as part of the exchange! Besides which the prisoners released were, as members of the Taliban Government, state actors not terrorists.
Getting soldiers back home has to be the first priority. If he deserted that can be addressed once he's back home.
