My hometown. I live less than 2 miles from the shooting site at the town square, county courthouse. Deputy shot in the leg, expected to survive, suspect dead, search for bomb continues.
Evidently, the shooter drove up on the courthouse entrance over the sidewalk and lawn, and just started shooting.

It's just that with the Internet and modern media and communications, we hear about every last idiotic thing.
When I was younger, it had to be a pretty serious thing happening before it would make the news (print or broadcast), unless it was local.
People have this tendency to think that these things are more frequent these days, but all evidence is to the contrary, especially when adjusted for population growth.
No need to panic, keep working on sensible gun law reform, avoid the fear and emotion.

(3,182 posts)Explain this: Cumming has NEVER, ONCE had a deputy shot at the county courthouse.
EVER.
Don't tell me this happens every day, because I've lived here since 1984 and I effing KNOW better.

(8,830 posts)with a firearm and shooting someone in the leg is just an "idiotic thing" that we shouldn't worry about, because gun violence is less frequent now. Come on, Skip - you know better than that.
The point isn't whether or not it has declined (most studies show an overall decline in violent crime since 1993, with a slight but still noticeable uptick since 2002). The point is how much there is - and the answer is too much.
http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2014/jan/17/lisa-bloom/americans-are-20-times-likely-die-gun-violence-cit/
(note: this is a fact-check of a statement - read through for the statistical links)
If you average the data collected (used in the above quote), it comes out to about 14 times more violent than the most developed nations.
No panic here (frankly, the only time I see panic is when gun-owners start shrieking about any kind of reform), but I think you're downplaying the problem a bit too much. Shooting someone - or even just trying to shoot someone - is not acceptable behavior. It is serious, regardless of who or how many are shot or simply find themselves in the line of fire.

Frankly, I'm sitting in my home right now, in lockdown because I live in the city limits, wondering if the courthouse less than 2 miles away is going to blow up from a bomb.
Neighboring county is sending their bomb squad.

I just heard about it while picking my kids up from VBS. Got out before they went on lockdown.
My husband had jury duty just a few months ago. So glad he's not there.
How do you know that the officer was shot in the leg? Was that on local radio?
Glitterati
(3,182 posts)I'm on several local websites, ForsythNews on Facebook, etc. and that's where I got the "shot in the leg" report.
Lots of new info coming out......guy drove up to the courthouse wearing a gas mask, threw a smoke bomb, pulled an AR15 and shot the officer. He was wearing a bullet proof vest. Had a court date today on drugs and weapons charges, his attorney quit on him YESTERDAY.
So, yeah, all wrong about an MRA idiot.......who knew? </sarcasm>

Cop on TV just said "Full frontal assault. He came here prepared to stay alive." Sounds like a "Glen Beck survivalist."
Cops at the house are ASSUMING the house is set to explode when cops arrive to search the house. "We are quite certain it is booby trapped to kill officers."

Secondarily, other municipalities are looking at the impact of additional expenses required for staff to check for licenses.
The Georgia law is idiotic.

These whack jobs don't need to wait for July 1, when it goes into effect. As evidenced today, they believe they have the right to take on their government and mow down as many as they can, thanks to this stupid kind of shit.
They don't care WHEN it takes effect - they think they won and they have every right to turn their guns on government.
Hell, I'd bet this guy didn't even KNOW the law wasn't in effect yet. Yahoos like this never pay attention to things like that. It's just full speed ahead.
And, our sheriff encouraged them when he said the guy at the soccer field terrorizing kids with open carry wasn't breaking any law.

(38,187 posts)Even if they did know the law wasn't in effect yet, they would claim ignorance and get by with it. Stay safe down here, if possible. I don't know how, though.

I don't know how you stay safe, either, when gun nuts like this feel entitled to shoot up the courthouse instead of showing up for court.
As long as our politicians are terrified of the NRA, they are jeopardizing the safety of us all.
The Sheriff said today that this nut job was "well known to law enforcement." Yeah, well, then step up BEFORE they shoot up the damned courthouse, Bubba!

(3,182 posts)as far as the gun nuts are concerned, along with our local sheriff, it's in effect NOW.
Remember the gun nut walking around displaying a gun at the local ball field a couple weeks ago, scared the shit out of the kids and parents, and the cops wouldn't do a thing about him? Yes, same town. Sheriff Duane Piper, supporter of the Wild West Gun Law said he was breaking no laws.

There's usually some old man with Obama-hating posters over on Maple Ave a block from the courthouse. Sometimes I give him a thumbsdown, but never flip him off.
I wouldn't mind living further in the mountains, but my guess is that there is a higher concentration of these bozos isolated in the mountains, "surviving".

According to Piper, Dennis Marx tried to walk into the courthouse with buckets of homemade explosives and ammunition. The sheriff said Marx also had smoke grenades, supplies and water.
Glitterati
(3,182 posts)Since they believe it's booby trapped with explosives. The car he drove to the courthouse was filled with "buckets" of explosives. The subdivision where he lives is starter homes, most on a half acre or less, so I'm assuming they're doing an evacuation first. Lots of kids off school for the summer in that subdivision right now. There's no doubt it's a very dangerous situation for all involved.
