Tennessee Man Accidentally Shoots, Kills Self While Driving

Wonder if he was any relation to Florida Man?

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/tennessee-man-driving-accidentally-shoots-kills-self

A man accidentally shot and killed himself while driving Wednesday afternoon down a Tennessee highway, Chattanooga TV station WTVC reported.

James Anthony McKenzie, 49, shot himself in the thigh with a .45 caliber handgun as he drove, Meigs County Detective Scott Wiggins said. A call came in for deputies to respond to a seizure, he said, but when they arrived McKenzie had apparently bled to death from the wound in his thigh.

The man was in the car alone, according to WTVC, and deputies were trying to determine how the gun discharged. McKenzie held a valid permit for the firearm.

They should bring back Six Feet Under, just to use this as the opening sequence.

Child gunned down by maniac- tragedy (I consider any child killed by maniac a tragedy and won't lessen it due to cause of death)
fumble-fingered hamhock blowing open his own femoral artery- let's yuck it up (Did said f-f h have a family? ah who fucking cares- he owned a gun)

Sat Jun 7, 2014, 10:59 PM
Jun 2014

I have no problem making fun of them. Likewise, if you are texting while driving and run into a tree, no sympathy from me. But if his careless handling of a loaded weapon had harmed or killed someone else, I wouldn't make fun of the person who got shot.

The only person who got injured here, was the person who did the injuring and was pretty clearly doing something stupid in some form or fashion. It doesn't mean I lack compassion. It means I have very limited patience for people who do stupid things that have a high likelihood of causing injury or death to others or themselves.

And yes, this applies to myself when I do something stupid. I had an existing elbow injury on Friday and when I re-injured it working out, I absolutely mocked myself. Because I knew it was a bad idea to try to put weight on that arm, but did so in spite of that.

84. Technically correct. Bullets kill people. But it is the gun which propels the bullet so...
Sun Jun 8, 2014, 02:48 AM
Jun 2014

Guns are still responsible for the killing because they are responsible for the propulsion of the bullet.
You throw a bullet by hand at somebody & the person won't be hurt (unless it hits them in the eye or something).
You let the gun rocket that bullet & BAM you got injury! Maybe death!

Now of course it takes the person to pull the trigger that rockets the bullet from the gun.
The person is responsible too. So people kill people.
BUT you give that person a feather & watch him try to kill with that feather...
...you'll be there all day & at best you'll cause laughter.
Even though you COULD kill with laughter because of breathlessness but that's a longshot.

Nope even WHEN people kill people, guns allow the people to kill more effectively.
MUCH more effectively. So the gun is at fault once again.
And I know what you're gonna say. What about knives, hammers, rocks, swords, bats?
They can kill but they're not quite as effective killers as guns are.
Guns are like remote control death while the other things are like having to walk up to the TV & change the channel.
Point & click vs. face to face confrontation.

ALSO those other things have multiple uses BESIDES killing.
Knives can spread butter, cut rope, even become a makeshift screwdriver.
Hammers drive nails to build buildings, crack open walnuts, help Mario smash barrels in Donkey Kong.
Rocks fill potholes, aid in building making, create zen gardens, become paperweights to keep papers from flying away with the wind.
Swords ARE pretty much for killing specifically but COULD be seen as just an overgrown knife. Still not quite as effective as a gun in killing because the lack of 'remote control point & click' aspect. You can run from a sword attack.
Bats? How are you gonna play the World Series without bats? Little League will be ruined without them. And like a sword you can still run away from a bat attack. No remote control point & click powers there either.

Nope guns are specifically made for killing & pretty much are only used for just that.
Yeah you COULD use a gun as a paperweight but there's no reason to create such an elaborate device just to hold down papers.
A common rock would do just fine. So would a book. So would canned vegetables.
Guns DO have that kill at a distance remote control point & click aspect so many other weapons & tools lack.
And if they're automatic or semi-automatic it's like broadband!

It's like you at work entering a voice command into your smartphone which sets your TV on a certain channel at home before you get there!
Wi-Fi 4G death!! AWESOME!!

Now bombs kill more massively than guns but they're sort of unwieldy.
Takes time to construct a bomb & then you gotta plant it somewhere.
Hard to conceal & hard to whip out at a moment's notice.
The prep time involved for a bomb attack is way longer than an nearly instantaneous gun.
That's the drawback even though it does have more death potential.

A car? Well yeah these things kill.
I'm seeing the Tracy Morgan story right now. Horrible.
But it takes time for a car to get to a high enough speed to cause death with its mass & velocity that it makes a terrible on-the-spot weapon.
Wives & husbands who in anger try to run over their spouses have to set it up & be able to accelerate quick enough to make the hit.
Key in the ignition & the acceleration time makes it more unlikely.
AND cars can only run on certain terrain. Get into a narrow spot or a higher surface & a car is useless.
Once going of course cars can be deadly but even then if you're alert & aware you can escape a car attack or a car collision.
I have done it many times dealing with reckless drivers.
Defensive driving & all that.
Besides cars are designed for transport primarily. Killing is just a side function because of its mass.
Apply similar standards for boats, trains, & airplanes.

Nope when it comes to ol' fashioned quick efficient effective death, nothing's better than a gun.
One day in the future we might get the high-tech gun known from Star Trek as the Phaser.
That will be one HELL of a killing weapon but Starfleet Protocol always demands that you set phasers to stun.
You probably can't get your hands on one of these easily without going through hella red tape.
You gotta pass the entrance exams at Star Trek's West Point to even have a chance.

Yeah until that day we just have the modern-day gun.
And because of all I elaborated with on this post, Guns DO Kill People.

16. We laugh at people who die now?

He could even have family on DU. Would it be just as funny if he was bi-polar and had committed suicide? Or if he had died of a heroin overdose?

I think it is incredibly hurtful to laugh at this, and I strongly support the government seizing all firearms and melting them down -- a complete and total repeal of the 2nd.

That he was the one that was "careless with a weapon." "The one with a careless weapon" just doesn't make any sense. Just being brutally frank.

We are a society that invented the term "Darwin Award" and then popularized it. Laughing at and mocking people for dying in unusual ways, or for dying while doing something for which we do not "approve" is fully accepted and embraced here, and on the rest of the Internet.

I'll be quite happy with the Human race when they manage to either lose interest in it, or excise it from common use.

A quality holster designed for the individual handgun secures it properly and safely.

I can only imagine if the vegans of this board when full tilt dipshit and laughed at every person who mentioned something about losing someone to heart disease (or anything else potentially diet-related). "Just another meat eater payin' the price! Yuk yuk yuk!"

Anyone want to laugh at someone with lung cancer?

Fucking ghouls.

This fool could have a caused a mass collision after he shot himself.
A multi-car pileup that could have killed many others because of his stupidity & recklessness.

To hell with what the gun nuts want!
Crack down on these damn guns!
Make it so hard to get a gun that people give up trying.
Most people just ain't responsible with guns & that's the bottom line.

If this idiot was a responsible gun owner, he would have his gun in his glove compartment where it belonged.
He has a permit but what were the qualifications for that permit?
Just pay a minor fee & get your license?
How often is a person tested & retested once they get the permit?

Sick of all these Yosemite Sams running around!
I once thought the character Yosemite Sam was a exaggerated caricature for comedic effect.
Come to find out it was Social Commentary!
The Looney Tunes writers were ahead of their time.

I do not understand the fascination with showing off/carrying a gun at all
times--especially not secured.

Very sad for his family. It didn't have to happen.

Gun nuts..
Blah, blah, blah.

Wonderful people taking the time to have a bit of fun at a mans death. Thank the internet for people lack of compassion. Not a one of these would be said in polite company. I don't care if you're pro/anti gun, people should show some compassion for a life lost. No,no,no...we must post a clichéd response and needle others while doing it. Gross.
