89-year-old man missing from retirement home turns up at D-Day ceremony

by Jen Hayden

This gentleman did not want to miss out on the 70th anniversary of D-Day:

An 89-year-old veteran reported missing from a nursing home was found in France marking the anniversary of the D-day landings. The pensioner, who left wearing his war medals, has contacted the home and said his friends are going to make sure he gets back safely when the commemorations end.

Sussex police were called at 7:15 pm on Thursday by staff at the Pines care home, Furze Hill, in Hove, who said an 89-year-old who lived there had gone out at 10:30 am and had not been seen since. He had gone out wearing a grey mackintosh and a jacket underneath with his war medals on, police said.

After several hours of searching, the retirement home received a call and called off the search:

The nursing home received a phone call from a younger veteran from Brighton at 10:30 pm who said he had met the pensioner on a coach on the way to France and that they were safe and well in a hotel in Ouistreham.

Early reports indicated the nursing home didn't want him to go, but they are refuting the story and are expected to make an announcement soon.

You fought in the war and want to go to the ceremony, you damn well go.

He'll get punished one way or the other for doing this. He'll possibly face legal action. I wish him the best.

But somehow I very much doubt that leaving a nursing home of your own free will is breaking the law.

But my point remains valid. Even if it is not by legal means, this will not go unpunished.

i can see some privately owned business in the US being so cold to kick them out of demand more money or some other shit and the whores going along with it and saying it's fine.

but i can't see this happening in the UK.

I think about my 89 yr old father-in-law who suffered a stroke last year and just wish he could break out and do something like this even though it would be the death of me from worrying!

After surviving the war and living to the rip age of almost 90, he deserved to be able to go. Who knows if he'd be able to make the next major anniversary in 5 years. I know watching the coverage that some of the men had a hard time standing and I watched them stand with pride as they prepared to shake the hand of their president.

Love it.

That's the exact kind of "Fuck You!" attitude that saved the world.
