RED ! It read: WAS HE WORTH IT ?
WTF !
Having served a tour of duty in Vietnam, I can't begin to say how much this kind of "shit stirring" angers me. We don't leave ANYBODY behind. EVER ! Dead or alive, we will get you home. Period. Full stop !
I was a very unhappy camper when I was drafted in 1965, but like many, I saved my protesting until I made it back to the world. And yes, I was pretty vocal about my objection to many things that were going on, and I even went beyond the perimeter many times-- as my DD214 will attest, with the article 15's I received--but if I had been captured whilst pleasuring myself at Mama sons hooch, I've no doubt when I was repatriated-dead or alive-no one would have questioned the value of me being returned home.
I served with many people I'm glad to never see again, but if they had been lost, killed or captured, I along with every other soldier or official would not have rested until we had them back.
Time Magazine and their producers are doing nothing more than playing to the unstable emotions and low information given to those that see only a headline and not take time to research the substance. Shame on them !
They make me sick.
We don't leave our troops behind.

(34,108 posts)We should all send something similar to them. They should be ashamed of themselves.
That poor family. I don't care what he did, we sent him there. I have avoided much of this because I am livid at the treatment he and his family are being given in the media. He would never have been there if we had not sent him there.
jaysunb, what you wrote here is powerful. Send it to them and we all should send something. If there is a problem with this guy it does not belong in the public dialog. We have lost our ever loving minds (well that happened a while back) and our hearts are shrinking like the Grinch. What a sick and sorry people we have become that we would accept this kind of treatment of anyone on a "news" magazine cover.

(34,108 posts)I will be too, so will my husband. This is simply sick and uncalled for. Do they want this guy hunted down all his life and his family? They are inciting and trying to curry favor with the worst elements of our society.
Worthless. Has been for some time but this is no better than a Hollywood Gossip rag with paparazzi that take personal photos from 3 miles away. Just plain old shit.

And now ... soldiers? Depending on who brings them back and their father's style of beard, apparently.
The only bright spot is maybe we will finally be collectively disgusted enough to reel in some of this cartoonish hate.

(53,339 posts)One of my men in Vietnam ended up as a POW after he left the platoon. He signed up for Huey door gunner to get out of the field, and then was shot down and captured. We brought him home--along with McCain--and when I saw him at a reunion a couple of years ago he was doing great.

I haven't buying Time magazine for years now - Once in the days it was a decent magazine - specially the international one - but after GWB got into office it kind of disappeared into the black hole irrationality and desperate conservatism was - I ended it, have never been back - even if they is sending my a letter every year, to offer me a tentative magazine deal... Time magazine is just not what it once was - when it had decent journalist, who know their job - and who made Time what it once was...

(2,577 posts)Here is someone who was a POW for 5 years ... tortured ... and a bunch of smug clowns publish crap like this. I can't believe this is a conversation we are having as a nation. It's embarrassing to me. We send our young people into harm's way for ill-defined wars, and they can't even expect us to be behind them. Really?
I don't care about his father's beard or the young man's viewpoint. We get our POW's home. It should be a no brainer.

(37,726 posts)Mark Shields: From Rumsfeld, an ugly smear and a giant fib
snip...
Rumsfeld's "wit and charismatic candor" were praised on the liberal New York Times op-ed page, while the editorial page chief of the conservative Washington Times, proclaimed as "most charismatic" of the year the defense secretary "who's the heartthrob of neo-cons and mature women around the country, and Republicans everywhere."
Well, this is a different year, and in his first 2003 press conference, Rumsfeld shamefully smeared American veterans and then deliberately fibbed about how there is absolutely "no need " to consider reinstating the draft because the nation's all-volunteer military was, he assured us, working perfectly.
First, the smear of veterans. Speaking of the 11 million Americans who, during the Vietnam years, answered their country's draft call and the 2 million who served in Vietnam, Rumsfeld alleged that these draftees "added no value, no advantage, really, to the United States armed services over any sustained period of time, because the churning that took place, it took enormous amount of effort in terms of training, and then they were gone."
I'll say "then, they were gone!" Of the 58,152 Americans who gave their lives in Vietnam 20,352 of them were draftees. How dare the secretary of defense say these good and brave Americans "added no value, no advantage, to the United States armed services?" Read more...

Brands include:
Time
Sports Illustrated
Entertainment Weekly
Money
Fortune
Food & Wine
Homes & Gardens
InStyle
Southern Living
and many others.
Getting mad at Time magazine for this disgraceful cover, but then keeping your subscription to Sports Illustrated is like being mad at Fox News for keeping Hannity on the air, but then still watching The Simpsons every Sunday night. They want your money, and they'll get it, unless you stop supporting them at the Corporate level. They are counting on us not paying attention.
You can send letters to the Time editors here:

Here's their Wikipedia page:

And of course, the parent company is TimeWarner. Its other brands include HBO, TBS and Warner Bros.

(31,997 posts)Those who were seen alive and well after capture but never returned. In the Korean war some defected to N. Korea and we did not try and get them back. There were POWs who ended up in Russia during WW II were not returned by Stalin. So this crap that we never leave our troops behind is just that -- crap.
