I said this before I've talked to many Repubs that are asking themselves the why they are Republican?
I believe that Cantor's defeat to a Tea Party candidate will make them wonder even more. I don't think they can bring themselves to vote for a real far right Tea Party person - when they are questioning their Party to begin with as it stands right now.
Some are embarrassed to admit that they are Repubs and are lying low. I don't believe the polls out there or the MSM talking heads that say that the Repubs will take the Senate and maintain the House. I think that that is just wishful thinking on their part and they are really worried. I think Cantor's defeat drives that home even more. If they really thought that Cantor would win tonight - they really missed the mark by a lot.
I think the MSM is trying to push the meme that the Repubs will take the Senate and maintain the House (all the gerrymandering) to give courage to these questioning Repubs to vote in Nov. Some I have talked to are saying they will sit this election out or vote for the non-Repub. Many won't get out to vote in Nov for a Tea Partier.
The Repubs are on the wrong side of most every issue and these Tea Party candidates take them even further past this wrong side.
Their constituents - the Repub voters - are beginning to realize this in a big way as they see the hypocrisy of their Party. My understanding is that the ratings are down for the RW radio and tv shows.
I think Nov 2014 could be a watershed election - if the Dems get aggressive and we can GOTV. Think about it - these Tea Party candidates can provide just the impetus the Dems need to GOTV.
Chuck Toad was blaming Cantor's loss on 'immigration reform'. That's what they'd like you to think - but I think it is much deeper than that.

(58,656 posts)Cantor thought he had a 30 point lead.
The media just wants a horse race. If it's not competitive, there's no news to fill the cycle, so they pimp how 'close' the races are. Bullshit. Sure, we may not win the House, but remember, we won a few seats in '12, when supposedly the gerrymander monster was supposed to shut us out.
I really think we'll hold the Senate and might just sneak the House away from them.
Nobody should be complacent, though. GOTV2014!!!

(154,021 posts)(One is here in my area, 52nd CA). But there is also the US Chamber that declared war on the Tea Party, they are really bad for business. The business faction is tired and feeding the house to Dems for one or two cycles makes sense if that cripples the strong tea.
Too tired to look for the chamber declares war, but I remember that well.

Easier than finding the actual nooz release at the Chamber at this point. I have the thing I think in my notes somewhere

(957 posts)Cantor's primary today attracted just a shade over 65,000 votes. More people attend UVa Football games in the fall.
In the general election in 2012 the 7th district total vote count was closer to 400,000. If we get our vote out and ordinary Republicans stay home it just might be enough.

(23,720 posts)I think a lot of conservatives are going to stay home in November. Sure the TP will get out to vote, but if Dems show up this time, there will be a lot of upset.

(45,442 posts)and just not bother voting.
Dems need to come out in full force in as many races as possible. The pendulum has shifted left on lots of issues.

(785 posts)Democrats have lots to run on, locally and nationally:
Republicans refusal to offer healthcare to the poor (Medicaid Expansion)
Republicans refusal to address Immigration Reform
Republicans trying to block people from exercising their right to vote
Republicans preventing women from exercising their reproductive rights
Republicans opposition to fair and livable wage
Republicans refusal to acknowledge man-made climate change (denial of reality doesn't make it go away)
Republicans refusal to stop the proliferation of guns (this is NOT gun control; it's CRIME control and Public Safety)
Republicans refusal to acknowledge the empirical failure of "trickle-down economics" (look at NJ, Kansas, etc and other red States that cut taxes are are now deeply in debt)
I could go on and on. Feel free to add your issues. Make sure your family and friends know that the Republicans are on the wrong side on almost EVERY ISSUE! Help people register to vote and get people to the polls in November. We CAN take back the House and give the President and ourselves a filibuster proof Senate.
While I don't usually bother to try to shame the shameless, I'm hoping that shaming will work to get Dems out to vote and to get the Republicans to stay home in November.
