Birds have lost out in a flap between city and federal wildlife officials over the lighting of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.
The City of Omaha has denied a request by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to darken ornamental lighting on the bridge during migrations.
The lights in question are those that illuminate the tall bridge spires and cabling from the side, not the safety lights at the top of the spires and on the deck.
Robert Harms, a biologist with U.S. Fish & Wildlife, said his agency thinks the lights confuse birds as they seek a resting spot after a night of flying.
