Republican rebels mount swift power grab after shock defeat of Eric Cantor

• GOP in disarray after David Brat beats House majority leader
• Rightwingers: Cantor's loss gives us fresh momentum
• String of rebels eye leading positions within upper ranks

In the House, Republicans on the right wing immediately sought to cement their surprise defeat of Cantor by mounting a swift power grab in the upper ranks of the party.

Cantor, holed up in his office, was considering whether he would immediately stand down as majority leader – the second most senior Republican position in the House – as many expect he will.

The current chief whip Kevin McCarthy, the third-ranking Republican in the House, is expected to run to replace Cantor. But Republican sources said that Texan rightwinger Pete Sessions had already made it clear he is considering a rival bid.

If McCarthy vacates his chief whip role to run for majority leader, that will open up another powerful position in the party's leadership. Another member from the right of the GOP, Steve Scalise, is eyeing the chief whip role, according to the same Republican sources.

3. Not Streaking Pete.

DALLAS (AP) -- The gloves have come off in the tight election race between two Texas congressmen - and every other article of clothing appears to be fair game as well. Democrats on Monday circulated old newspaper clippings of a 1974 college streaking stunt staged by hundreds of students - including then-18-year-old Pete Sessions - at Southwest Texas State University.

The conservative Republican congressman - who wrote a column condemning Janet Jackson's nude display during her 2004 Super Bowl halftime performance - apparently bared his bottom with about 300 others in a stunt that ended with arrests and a clash with police. Newspapers were filled with nude photos and headlines like: "Dudes, Broads, Bare Bods."

Southwest Texas students were apparently trying to break a streaking record set by another university amid a nationwide college streaking craze.

"Congressman Sessions' old school days are long gone," said Sessions' spokesman Chris Homan. "He recognizes it as an immature action of an 18-year-old college freshman."

But the campaign of Democrat Rep. Martin Frost is holding his rival's bare body to the fire.

"Pete Sessions exposed himself to children and strangers," said Frost spokesman Justin Kitsch. "He's exposed himself as a hypocrite as well."

Sessions' spokesman dismissed the comparison of Sessions' juvenile acts with those of Jackson. But the flap isn't the kind of exposure the four-term Republican wants in the final weeks of a tight race with Frost, a 13-term Democrat.

The two incumbents are battling each other in a Republican-leaning district in the Dallas area. Frost, Texas' senior congressman, lost his district under Republican redistricting last year.

Sessions transferred from Southwest, which is now called Texas State University, to Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where he graduated in 1978.

5. More on Pete Sessions, the campaign lawn sign thief:

Today, Congressman Martin Frost’s Campaign Chair, Marc Stanley, said the following at a press conference where Pete Sessions’ Dallas Police Department was revealed that, as a sitting member of Congress, Pete Sessions was caught stealing his opponents’ campaign yard signs:

“Yesterday, Pete Sessions called for people to bring forward evidence that would suggest his campaign would be involved in immature political tricks, like stealing yard signs. Here is evidence that not only suggests that Pete Sessions’ campaign would condone this type of immature prank; it is proof that he has participated in this foolish behavior.

“District 32 deserves more from their Congressman than impulsive, immature political stunts. It is normal for parents to worry about their teenagers getting hurt or caught doing something silly; they shouldn’t have to worry that their Congressman is going to engage is such childish behavior. These pranks have been conducted by a sitting member of Congress, and Pete Sessions himself must respond to his actions and apologize immediately. It’s time for Pete Sessions to start acting like an adult.

“I remember when I was a kid, there used to be an announcement that said, ‘It’s ten o’clock, do you know where your children are?’ The people of North Texas shouldn’t have to ask, ‘It’s 10:19, do you know where your Congressman is?’ He’s out stealing signs.”
