NEW YORK The demographic transformation of the United States of America is one of the greatest untold stories of our time. That is thanks in part to widespread underreporting in our mainstream media.
Already, more than half of the babies born today are non-white and while conservative estimates say the United States will be majority non-white in three decades, there is a new prediction that places that reality in a much nearer future. Guy Garcia, President for New Mainstream Initiatives at EthniFacts, says the magic date on which non-white America will go over the cultural diversity edge is August 22 of this year.
Using metrics that treat not just racial or ethnic numbers as factors, but also white allies those whites whose children have married non-whites, who have a gay family, or who have proximity and acceptance to diversity Garcia has developed a CulturEdge Countdown Clock. That clock tells us that the minority will become the majority on that day in late August, at precisely 7:56 p.m.
Its not the future, people. Its now.
And yet Latino and African American communities are too often dismissed as subjects while at the same time being courted as consumers and voters by media, politicians and the like. But who is telling the story from the perspective of the people on the front lines of these communities?

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (Pub.L. 89236, 79 Stat. 911, enacted June 30, 1968), also known as the HartCeller Act,[1] abolished the National Origins Formula that had been in place in the United States since the Emergency Quota Act. It was proposed by Representative Emanuel Celler of New York, co-sponsored by Senator Philip Hart of Michigan, and promoted by Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts.
The Hart-Celler Act abolished the national origins quota system that was American immigration policy since the 1920s, replacing it with a preference system that focused on immigrants' skills and family relationships with citizens or U.S. residents. Numerical restrictions on visas were set at 170,000 per year, with a per-country-of-origin quota, not including immediate relatives of U.S. citizens, nor "special immigrants" (including those born in "independent" nations in the Western Hemisphere, former citizens, ministers, and employees of the U.S. government abroad).[1]
..............................................
The 1965 act marked a radical break from the immigration policies of the past. The law as it stood then excluded Asians and Africans and preferred northern and western Europeans over southern and eastern ones.[2] At the height of the civil rights movement of the 1960s the law was seen as an embarrassment by, among others, President John F. Kennedy, who called the then-quota-system "nearly intolerable".[3] After Kennedy's assassination, President Lyndon Johnson signed the bill at the foot of the Statue of Liberty as a symbolic gesture.
In order to convince the American people of the legislation's merits, its proponents assured that passage would not influence America's culture significantly. President Johnson called the bill "not a revolutionary bill. It does not affect the lives of millions",[4] while Secretary of State Dean Rusk estimated only a few thousand Indian immigrants over the next five years, and other politicians, including Senator Ted Kennedy, hastened to reassure the populace that the demographic mix would not be affected; these assertions would later prove grossly inaccurate.[5][

(34,648 posts)I like how they added people in interracial relationships and those with minority children and close family in with minorities. It makes perfect sense to add them in with us since they are a big support system and it feels wrong to separate them and place them in different catagories.

They want to be included with us and i love that idea more than they do. (34,648 posts)Thats why they have been acting all militant for the last few years. It's true that i worry about them harming others. This is where their communities and leaders need to step in and provide good role models for them and education so we can prevent the spread of w. right wing violence. With this rash of YWM violence tearing through the country in think they need to have a discussion about gun thug violence. And find a way to get the community leaders to pay attention.

(25,406 posts)Correct me if I am wrong, but the author seems to be saying that whites will become the minority in late August if we pretend that white people whose children have married non-whites are no longer white themselves, and that gay people are not white, and that those whites who have "proximity and acceptance to diversity" are not really white. Don't get me wrong, I really do not give a shit what percentage my personal racial group happens to be in the general population, but it seems to be stretching things a little to do things like pretending that white gays are not "really" white to try to make some kind of point.
bravenak

bravenak
(34,648 posts)What you say is very intersting and i think you are right that we can and should do more to empower economically depressed groups, and i would include poor whites in this group that need targeted relief. Many have been poor for many generations and lived along side other poor groups since before the end of segregation. Poor white trash as they used to be called got treated some times much worse than a coveted slave with a trade like blacksmithing and were looked down upon ( by slaves and masters alike) and refused help and employment at times.

(10,362 posts)Without socio-economic mobility, we'll stagnate and sink back to the Middle Ages.
As for South Africa, I read this last year:
The farce of South Africa's "miracle transition" is fast unravelling. The ANC is no longer the vanguard of the revolution; the beloved party has been caught on the frontline of the protection of white interests. And yes, despite the cold, hard facts of socioeconomic inequality, South Africa is subject to conflicting narratives. A non-racial South Africa simply cannot exist if 9% of one racial group earn six times more than the majority.
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/21/south-africa-white-privilege-afrikaner
Interesting stats when you consider that the political system in SA is almost wholly controlled by the black majority, who constitute 80% of the nation.
It makes me realize that even if the economically underprivileged controlled 95% of the House and Senate, the task of easing economic inequality would still be a huge, huge challenge.

(34,648 posts)We really have to make sure our people are more informed and pick the right leadership. I can understand the frustration with corporate centered Democrats, and we need to get enough voter to take back the house in order to give our politician permission to effect change by demanding that they do. We have to get angry. We have to be resolute. And i think we may have to get out there and march on Washhington and stay until they notice us. And not an astroturf movement, something real and broad and diverse. I hope it happens soon.

(6,342 posts)Race relations isn't that simple. I've known Latinos that are just as racist against blacks as whites can be. So to suggest this really changes anything is a bit naive.
Race relations is far more complex than population numbers. The question concerning the future is not which race has the most people...but will fair-skinned or white-skinned people (regardless of their race) still be privileged in society more than dark-skinned or black-skinned people? That's the giant question..... The raw numbers alone doesn't change the privilege issue. There are several countries where a racial/ethnic minority holds all the power.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)You know who started that stuff and now we live within that framework.
It includes whites with connections to minorities and lgbt and their families in the group with minorities. Also, i cannot take credit for the article, i did not write it.
Some latinos are black. Look at my pic. There you see a woman who speaks spanish and has an hispanic surname. And first name. My middle name is Arab.
I am accepted in the hispanic community and yes there are issues between hispanics and Blacks because they get pitted against each other.
We need to work on the privilege issue but i think we will have less trouble in the future than we did in the past.
AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)The OP/ED that the OP is based on fudges the numbers intentionally. The US census bureau estimated last year that the country will reach the 50/50 ratio by 2043, not this August. By the measure of the OP, my white brother in law is a minority because his wife is African American. That is just plain ludicrous.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)On purpose. Also the parents of minority children are grouped in with their children instead of separating parent from child and placing them in separate catagories. It makes perfect sense to me to group close relatives together instead of counting them separately. August is the date.
AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)Your OP is a whole lotta wishful thinking. It says more about you than anything else.

AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)No matter how much you wish they were. Neither is my white brother in law, no matter how much you wish it so. Your obsession with Caucasians, and endless attempts, in OP after OP after OP after OP, at fomenting racial division in the Democratic party says more about you than them.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)So you think i'm obsessed with white people huh? I live in a white nation. I am black and i am white. I guess my white part doesn't count. I have to only talk about black stuff. I wonder if my native american part counts.
The anger you have at me discussing things that affect me is very telling. Who are you to tell me that i am not white enough to speak? I just as white as i am black and near about that much native american. 1/3, 1/3, and 1/3. I can speak on issues if i please. If the majority would accept their mixed offspring as one of them i would not have this problem to discuss.
You can trash the thread.
Have you ever thought that maybe i just find white people fascinating? Could be i'm just attracted to them.
Kurska
(5,739 posts)Since when are gay people and their families automatically not white? Since when are people who marry minorities not white? Since when are people who live in proximity or support diversity (whatever that means)
This has to be a joke. Don't forget the Irish they aren't really "white" either.
Article seems more like a Klan member wrote it talking about how "race traitors" aren't white.

Boehner is a follower, not a leader. He just was in the right place at the right time to get a wealthy patron and he's lived off that.
I think when he looks at PBO he wonders what his life might have been if he followed the right path.
