Milwaukee bar sets up fake Brazilian favela for World Cup viewing

http://voices.suntimes.com/sports/sports-prose/milwaukee-bar-sets-up-fake-brazilian-favela-for-world-cup-viewing/

Yeah, yeah, yeah . . . everybody is fired up about the World Cup starting today. And everyone has a different way of showing it.

Take the bar Nomad in Milwaukee, for instance. They’ve gone to the trouble of construction a fake favela for their patrons to view the action at outside the bar – complete with flat screens, of course.

From the bar’s website:

The Nomad event includes the temporary construction of a courtyard viewing area inspired by the colors and spirit of the mountainside “favelas” of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The “Nomad Favela” takes over an adjacent parking lot and consists of a surfboard bar, a Belair Cantina taco shack, and large outdoor space to view all of the tournament’s soccer matches on six large televisions. The unique space is the collaborative effort of a small group of volunteering artists and craftspeople and includes several from Makerspace.

Oddly, there’s some criticism of creating a scene of abject poverty for boozers in Milwaukee to come enjoy their World Cup soccer in. But fear not, if you’re itching to blast up I-94 to take in the favela flavor, the bar’s owner has no intention of tearing his fancy slum down:

Some of those favelas (the real ones) are rather freakishly surreal. MADem Jun 2014 #1

Yes, they are "slums" and there's poverty, but the ingenuity present in many of those neighborhoods is nothing short of astounding. You can go in a crappy little door to someone's modest house and find yourself in an incredibly comfortable and homey abode.

Amazing what some people can do with very little.
