My husband was born as a hyphenated two name first name, not a middle name, like Billy-Bob (except nicer, lol). So when he goes to the social security office for a replacement card and they inform him that is name is Billy B now. He finds out that our loan is also now in his new and not-so-improved name that he never asked for nor wants.
He has fought for years as companies have tried to get him to drop the second part of his first name. But he like most people is attached to his name, and over the years has had to demand that his name be spelled and presented correctly. I guess it was just too much for big-business to handle, so it has just magically changed. I kid you not.
He's on the phone attempting to get them to fix it back, but so far they keep telling him that he will have to get a legal name change if he wants his original name back.

(52,208 posts)like b. bob (except nicer, lol).
in both cases, they were called by their middle name from birth, they never used their first name except as an initial.
forms have gotten a bit better over the years, but still very often you have room only for first name and middle initial.
personally, i changed my name twice, at the beginning and end of my first marriage. no hyphen, the last names happened to go together surprisingly well, so we just merged them into one name. like scum and bag (except nicer, lol).
in any event, both times, i had only minor issues which were easily cleared up within a few months. exept for the social security administration, which took about 5 *years* the first time and maybe 2 years the second.

(28,394 posts)My name is like a "compound word"--- two names combined into one. I get it separated, hyphenated, and the first name with an initial all the time. It is really annoying.

(16,334 posts)My husband's last name (misspelled) as the first name, then the initial of my first name followed by my maiden name.
I have no idea when the change started but it's been interesting to see how my name has morphed over the years, lol.

(14,557 posts)Our surname is a given name in plural and our oldest son's given name is a known surname...the IRS
had held up his first ever return for a long time so we finally went to the local branch and discovered that someone
had arbitrarily decided that he had somehow mixed up the order of his name.
Well, I have the world's best printing and cursive and I was the one who actually filled out the forms and made
sure his signature was very readable. I asked why someone would do this and was informed they had never
seen that combination and just decided my son didn't know what he was doing.
We got it worked out then and there and all has been good since.

(8,830 posts)a work colleague telling me that when she divorced and returned to using her maiden name, the SS office told her that her new card would henceforth list her with her given name, her former married surname, her maiden name. She officially lost her middle name - the government decided what her legal name should be.
I don't know if they still do that, but it was appalling and they didn't give her a choice.
My sympathies to your husband and good luck in the fight.
