REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
YOUR COMMENTS
Since this is fake, poster has been told it's fake and this stupid picture trivializes rape this should be hidden.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Sun Jun 15, 2014, 12:01 PM, and voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: How far is this pseudo feminist alert nonsense going to go? There is nothing offensive here other than the manufactured outrage created by the HOF group.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I'm voting to hide this because I did a search and the only place I can find this image is on woman hating sites that defy description. I don't think DU should be added to that list.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I think its about where rape starts and makes a valid point.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The alerter's comments changed my mind. Of course the term"stare rape" is ridiculous. The origins of this photo appear dubious (it does appear to be an attempt to dilute actual anti-rape messages). This may not be the intent of the OP, but it is the result. I am hoping if the intent of the OP was not to attempt to trivialize other anti rape messages and I hope s/he will have deleted the post by the time the jury has completed.
Thank you.

(22,165 posts)My initial thought was: the respondents in the thread are clearly stating that this is BS ... The alerter changed my mind and I realized that this garbage should not be given further attention.
I thought that if the OP had posted this in good faith, when it became clear this was solely an attempt to diminish the anti-rape message, they would self delete. Obviously, it was not an unfortunate post, posted in good faith ... it appears to be the opposite

(35,961 posts)Which is why jury results can be incredibly random within a short period of time. I didn't agree with either jury result in this case and would have voted to hide the first and voted to leave seabeyonds post, where I'm really not understanding why it was hidden.
And coz I'm too lazy to post again tonight, and have only just caught up on these 'rape stare' threads, my reaction when I looked at that first OP and without having read any further was that it was total bullshit aimed to minimise rape...

(6,452 posts)I tried "Stare rape" origin and "Stare rape" etymology. This would be really fascinating and useful information if you had some hard evidence.

(6,452 posts)I explained how I tried 2 separate google searches and didn't find anything damning. If you have a point to make, you should provide the evidence. It would take YOU even less time since you already know which data are pertinent and where they're located, and it would save time for all your readers and make them more likely to get your point.
After looking through all the links on the first page of the search you provided, I found no evidence that the "Stare rape" photo is fake. There is another picture in that album which has two versions, showing that at least one of them is fake. An important thing to take away from this is that the text of a sign in a picture can easily be altered. However, that doesn't prove that any particular photo IS fake.
If you have harder evidence, I'd like to see it.

(6,452 posts)The OP made a statement that seemed to imply having proof that the whole "stare rape" thing was fake, and created by specific people. There doesn't seem to be any. I was expecting to see like a reddit or 4chan discussion page where the idea was hatched to exaggerate feminist claims and spread them by meme, and what I got was many images that prove nothing, discussion boards discussing the idea of "Stare rape", and exactly one post where some unknown person asserted that "stare rape" was made up. You can't support an assertion with an assertion! (That person also said that "the entire set" of images was proven fake, but I went through the discussion thread and didn't find any proof of this, beyond one image being clearly fake, and that was not even the image that this thread's OP is referencing.)
There IS evidence that this isn't a real thing - namely that I can't find any feminists seriously backing the idea (however, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, so that's a little shaky.) But that's an entirely different angle than the approach that the OP took:
1) Make a statement implying proof,
2) Do not provide any proof,
3) Put others down as lazy when they ask for proof, when the burden of proof is always on the person making a claim (and still fail to provide any proof.)
A correct argument badly made is still a bad argument.
Squinch
(50,949 posts)absence of evidence doesn't mean evidence of absence. I guess we'll never know whether you rob banks while wearing a clown suit or not...

(951 posts)I find it interesting that we are debating degrees of boundaries, and what triggers either a flight or fight response in women, or triggers fear of assault. Not quite so subjective when what we learn is what can precede a sexual attack on one.
And what we learn as women is that the stare is used to intimidate, objectify, and is used as a tracking mechanism by many animals when they are hunting prey. It is often done from a perceived position of power relative to the subject. That is what women are taught through various forms of media, and our experience bears this out. So where do you draw the line between being comfortable with someone's gaze vs a stare. I guess you have not experienced this. And it isn't just the stare, it often enough is accompanied by gestures, words. And met with anger if you object. That to me is the telling part. They don't say I'm sorry, they are angry that you have a boundary and don't allow their intrusion. Can you imagine your child having to deal with this? It is mostly about power. Rape is about power.
I know all too well the difference between real rape and this, "rape stare". What I also understand is a level of sexualized victimization when men use staring as a means of abuse.

(951 posts)is a gross aspect of rape and precedes the act of rape, sometimes overtly, sometimes just playing on a disparity in age and position. The incident of rape where you are suddenly over-powered by a stranger is more myth than reality.

(6,342 posts)You suggested the other image was photoshopped by trolls to make feminists look stupid. And I asked if you think this one is too.
My point is that just because someone makes a stupid sign doesnt mean it's intentionally faked. Sometimes the people that make it are just plain idiots. There are a lot of people out there, whether they call themselves feminists or not, who say really stupid things. When you see something stupid like that, don't just jump to the conclusion..."oh that's gotta be fake!"
