Thanks Anti-Vaxxers! California’s whooping cough outbreak is officially an epidemic.

The disease is cyclical, so outbreaks like this are expected every three to five years, although certain factors are known to contribute to their severity. The last peak, which occurred back in 2010, saw over 9,000 reported cases and 10 infant deaths. Studying the data at several years’ distance, researchers last year were able to confirm that vaccine refusal helped fuel the epidemic. As NPR reported in September:

They compared the location and number of whooping cough, or pertussis, cases in that outbreak with the personal belief exemptions filed by parents who chose not to vaccinate for reasons other than a child’s health. (Some children with compromised immune systems aren’t able to be vaccinated.)

…They found that people who lived in areas with high rates of personal belief exemptions were 2 1/2 times more likely to live in a place with lots of pertussis cases. “The exemptions clustered spatially and were associated with clusters of cases,” Jessica Atwell, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and lead author on the study, told Shots. It was published online in the journal Pediatrics.

whooping cough. He was probably about 15 at the time.

I have little tolerance for anti-vaxxers, because through ignorance they put the lives of children at real risk. Because they know no history, they don't realize that diseases like measles once were major killers. In fact, measles so decimated the Incas that the conquistadores conquered them easily.

Notice how many of the graves are babies and young kids?

Thanks for bringing back "the good old days," anti-vaxx loons.

It is heartbreaking (and somewhat disturbing) to see so many husband/wife stones alongside several stones of their young children that preceded them in death.

I know of a couple who not only refuse to vaccinate their child, they say that HIV transmission through unprotected sex is government propaganda (they like to swing). The wife even says there is no need for mammograms as self-examination is more than enough.

Live around anti-vaxxers = live in a high vaccine-preventable-disease cluster.

Now, I'm a rather fussy proponent of "correlation doesn't equal causation," but in this particular instance I'm pretty sure it does.

I just saw where adults who have lost immunity can catch it.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/whooping-cough/basics/definition/con-20023295

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In many people, it's marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like "whoop."

Before the vaccine was developed, whooping cough was considered a childhood disease. Now whooping cough primarily affects children too young to have completed the full course of vaccinations and teenagers and adults whose immunity has faded.

Deaths associated with whooping cough are rare but most commonly occur in infants. That's why it's so important for pregnant women — and other people who will have close contact with an infant — to be vaccinated against whooping cough.

This is especially important if you work with infants and children, or have them in your home. You don't want to either get this stuff or pass it on.

Damn. Expect some babies to die; not as many as in the olden days, because hospitalization can offer them support while they struggle to recover. There's no cure, just prevention.
