It pisses me off when I fall for this crap, which I did again with this Hillary Bible nonsense.
The Bible is about the millionth book she mentions in this interview, but whatever source put it in their headline punked us all.
People see the Bible answer in the headline and we think it must be noteworthy, but read the actual article and it's the least interesting answer in the whole thing, let alone controversial.
People are talking like she went out of her way to thump the Bible and that is just false. We're all passionately debating something that never happened.

The former secretary of state and author of Hard Choices keeps copies of Republican memoirs like Faith of My Fathers and Decision Points on her shelves.
What books are you reading right now?
Ive got a pile of books stacked on my night stand that Im reading or hoping to get to soon. Im usually working on more than one at a time. So right now its The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt; Mom & Me & Mom, by Maya Angelou; and Missing You, by Harlan Coben.
What was the last truly great book you read?
I cant stop thinking about The Hare With Amber Eyes, by Edmund de Waal; The Signature of All Things, by Elizabeth Gilbert; Citizens of London, by Lynne Olson; and A Suitable Boy, by Vikram Seth.
Who are your favorite contemporary writers? Are there any writers whose books you automatically read when they come out?

(45,319 posts)Where we could have had a strong advocate for civil rights and justice, instead we had a person 'influenced' by a select handful of verses which tell her to hold a bigoted attitude while she freely skips over long passages in that same book which say things like 'women should be silent and never usurp authority over men'. It seems it has influenced how she judges others, but has had scant influence on how she lives her own life. 'This part here, which says you are inferior? That's the Word of God, Unalterable. This next part that says I am an offense to nature for having a huge job while being a woman? That's dated historical material no longer applicable to today's world.'
I'm just sick of it. I'm tired of a politics that alienates millions for some cheap self serving rhetoric that is simply not backed up by the personal behavior of the speaker. It's not just Hillary, but she is guilty of this. They edit that book into a love song to their own egos, then throw the remainder at the little people. 'God does not approve of YOU!'.
Sick of it. Find another song to sing.

(3,163 posts)The question usually cited is "What is your favorite book?" but that was not the question. It was "What book has made you who you are?" which is a very different question, and to which the Bible is a very reasonable answer.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't vote for Hillary if she was running against a dead goat, but this dishonest hyperbole has got to stop.

I imagine should someone the cite the above as being most influential on their life, your wholly objective premise would remain consistent, yes?

(45,319 posts)For fuck sake. Christians of many varieties have spent years openly attempting to prevent people like me from having basic human rights. In some nations, Christians are engaged in violent attacks upon us. They made Prop 8, spent millions to strip a minority of an existing right.
But if anyone objects to that, they are 'crapping' on Christians.
Any faith that teaches that level of arrogance has to be fetid, but you know what? Jesus taught the opposite of what Christians do when they whine they are being 'crapped on' by folks they attack. Jesus told his followers directly and clearly that they would be mocked for his sake, and he commanded that they rejoice and be very glad when that happens. He did not, in fact, urge them to stomp on the ground and say 'you are crapping on us'. He also never told anyone to go out and prevent others from having a happy life.
Why is it the Christians ignore the urgings of Jesus to rejoice when they feel 'crapped upon'? Why to they attack the rights of others endlessly, then when they face criticism whine and cry that it is unfair to speak poorly of them, while it is fine for them to say gay people are demonic and undeserving of rights?
Prop 8 was a huge steaming dump that the 'faith community' so wanted to release onto the gay community that they spent millions and millions on political laxatives to get ready for the day.
Let me know when someone attempts to vote your Christian rights away, how's that?

(11,804 posts)I wasn't talking about you here - I was talking about the dozens of posts mocking the Bible and mocking Christians. Are you saying that none of those posts exist? Really?

(45,319 posts)Prop 8. Show me any example of that sort of 'crapping' Christians took on others has ever been done to them. Show me.
Show me the Westboro Baptist counterpart that 'craps' on Christians. Show me where there is a leader of LGBT saying that Christians should not have equal rights. Show me. The Pope says we are an attack on God.
A Christian Republican recently said that Christians are allowed to murder gay people. Stone us to death. I think the 'good Christians' should be objecting to that shit instead of claiming it is they who are being threatened with death.

(11,804 posts)That of course part of my problem with how must of DU treats Christians - it lumps all Christians into the same bucket - labels them bigots and then craps on them. This is what you do. You clearly don't see any difference between me and the Westboro fucks and you don't care how offensive that is to me.

(45,319 posts)None of them claim that LGBT are inferior, nor do they whine that they are persecuted. They act like they believe the texts. Like they have read them. They do not rush to constantly judge others. To characterize, to insinuate and accuse.
You refuse to speak to the words I actually say, you never answer a question I ask of you. It is almost as if you dismiss me as a person.

(27,461 posts)because someone, maybe Huffington Post, put that answer in their headline. As if she came out with a statement about her love of the Bible.
But then I read the interview, more sensibly titled by the NYT as "Hillary by the book", and the answer about the Bible turned out to be inconsequential. One answer among a million others. It only stood out to me in how uninteresting it was compared to the other books she mentioned.

(45,319 posts)Her statements are like those of a Republican. She claims marriage is and always was one man and one woman, from the beginning of time. Because of religion and morality. Of course, this makes her claims of being a student of the Bible dubious, because that book is filled with polygamy, purchased brides of minor age, and all sorts of things I am surprised to hear Hillary say she never heard of.

But reading that interview where she talks about books, it simply doesn't support my prejudices against her. Mostly what the interview does is make me want to read more books.

(85,996 posts)At the risk of appearing predictable, the Bible was and remains the biggest influence on my thinking. I was raised reading it, memorizing passages from it and being guided by it. I still find it a source of wisdom, comfort and encouragement.

(45,319 posts)She now says she favors marriage equality, as of March 2013. But here is the Hillary we all know, those of us who give a shit about civil rights and equality.
Hillary 2000:
"Marriage has got historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time and I think a marriage is as a marriage has always been, between a man and a woman."
Of course by that time, even Dick Cheney had stated his support for equality. Cheney. But not our Hillary.
Instead of being the advocate for justice she could have been, she used her position to oppose the rights of my community, repeatedly and always citing religion.
This does not make me see her as a President who would be on my side at all. So I pick someone who has not spent decades reciting right wing talking points against me.

What the right wants to do to this country is terrorism, what they ARE doing.
Is Hillary a liberal like me or many of you?
Well, for that answer where is that list of stuff she supports, I was surprised by how liberal some of it was.
Hey, if you arent going to vote for her who then?
This isnt 2028 when there might be a real choice for a politician who isnt entrenched in the system as they ALL Are now, this is now.

to be mentioned as having a great deal of influence. It is the same with me. We were steeped in the Bible - Sunday School, Bible School, hour long sermons, etc from the time I could remember anything to when I graduated from high school. I moved on and eventually was able to abandon the literalism. But I never lost my appreciation for the poetry, the stories, the myths, and yes the moral teachings of the NT. It is foolish to say that by acknowledging that Hillary is somehow pandering to right wing Christians.

(13,704 posts)evidence that Jesus was risen from the dead and he was not born of a virgin. I am no longer a Church goer and have formed my own beliefs; however I do appreciate my Christian upbringing and believe that Jesus Christ was a unusual man for his time and applaud his desire to see the better parts of mankind.
